#3 - Modern Slavery

Imagine yourself as a secret government agent sent undercover to learn about the possibility of slavery in the world today.  You have been given unlimited time, funds and resources, including the most modern technology, to gather as much information as possible concerning this issue.  Your task is to gather evidence and prepare a report directly for the President of the United States on your findings.

This task is personal for you.  Youve learned about slavery in high school and college, but until now, you didnt know the extent to which it still existed.  Your family just discovered, through their own genealogical research (the science of studying your ancestors) that your great-grandparents were slaves in America.  Among their possessions was an old, stained letter, written in sloppy handwriting from your great grandmother.  It was a letter to the future and in it she wrote, Whichever one of my chilren or chilrens chilren finds his letter, pleas never let anyon go through what I did.  No one shoul suffer the sins of slavery.

Using the sites below, you should research the problem of slavery in the world today.  In your report, you need to highlight the following factors:

1)      The extent of the problem [In your own words, gather facts, figures, statistics, detailed stories and accounts of how big the problem is in the world today.  You should include at least 10 detailed facts here.]

2)      The causes of the problem [Explain of why the problem of modern slavery exists.  Think of the reasons for each type of slavery (labor, trafficking, etc.) You should include at least 3 reasons.]

3)      How the problem should be fixed [Explain of how the problem of modern slavery should be addressed and eliminated.  Think of what both governments [5 actions] and individual people [5 actions] can do.]

Your report should be addressed to the President of the United States.  It will be specifically mentioned by the president in a news conferences to the world as soon as the report is completed.  If you want, you can use the following format:

To the honorable President of the United States,

Mr. President, I believe that slavery in the modern world is the biggest problem we face today.  [Then list your ten facts about the extent of the problem here.]  As you can see, it is an enormous issue, but one that is caused by the following factors: [then list your three causes here].  Finally, Mr. President, we must adopt the following actions in order to end this problem.  I recommend that the US government should [explain how the government should fix the problem here].  But that isnt enough, Mr. President.  Individual people must do their part too, such as [explain what individuals should do to fix the problem here].

One fact about slavery was every slave was bought for a reasonable amount of money. When people are slaves they are pretty much forced to do things they dont want to do and the thing they have to do it in whatever condition there in. Some slaves were threatened and abused and really couldnt do much about it. They receive basic food and shelter as payment for their work, but may never pay off the loan, which can be passed down for generations. The main reason we have slaves today is because people are racist it was the white people that really didnt get along with the black people. The white people were the rich ones so they had the money and the bought black people to do there work. As they started getting more slaves they came up with more and more rules to pretty much hurt the slaves. Honestly I think slavery should be stopped because its destroying a lot of peoples lives. I dont know it can be stopped but I sure if people get together there is a way for it to be done.

1? The extent of the problem [In your own words, gather facts, figures, statistics, detailed stories and accounts of how big the problem is in the world today.  You should include at least 10 detailed facts here

In India they still practice slavery and a method they use is debt bondage. The way they make them stay is tricking them with promises of good jobs, but they are isolated and must deal with their employer in every way. I found this out with my special agent work. Also in Kuwait the have the same practice in slavery. In both of there ways of slavery is making the people house slaves. If they have children they will have to be slaves to until there debt is paid.

2?the causes of the problem [Explain of why the problem of modern slavery exists.  Think of the reasons for each type of slavery (labor, trafficking, etc.) You should include at least 3 reasons.]  In the places I found out about is that it is mostly because of debt. Other places still racist of skin and make people work for them. People have slaves is that there too lazy to do it them selves so if they can manipulate a human to do it for you.         How the problem should be fixed [Explain of how the problem of modern slavery should be addressed and eliminated.  Think of what both governments [5 actions] and individual people [5 actions] can do.                      There should be more support groups helping and organizing ways to try to prevent this problem. The government should be involved in stopping this bye have laws against and national meetings with the other countries and have a serious discussion on the problem. make it illegal for that to happen in the world. People can start protest and fun raisers to get money to get them out of their predicaments and by having a march to be herd. There is other ways people can try to do to help this problem.

MODERM SLAVERY Upon arrival in the United States, however, Beatrice found herself enslaved: locked in a suburban home, working for up to 20 hours a day, and denied education. Regularly, she was forced to hold her hands above her head and kneel on the floor for long periods while being beaten. In 1998, after she had been beaten for over an hour, her screams alarmed the neighbors. The police were called, and Beatrice was discovered.

She had been held captive in the United States for nine years.

Beatrice is from Nigeria and was enslaved in 1989 in New York by a child-welfare worker and her husband. But Dora is from Ghana; Vasantha from Sri Lanka; Chanti from India; Yua Hao from China. They were all enslaved here over the last two decades. Discovered in Washington, D.C., Boston, Berkeley, California, and Bryant, Arkansas, respectively, these victims were enslaved by a World Bank employee, a Boston University student, a landlord, and a television executive.

Incredibly, slavery has returned to our shores. Forced to work for no pay under the threat of violence, a slave is a human being whose time and body are owned by another. Though legally abolished in 1865 in the United States, slavery has not ended here.

Thousands of Beatrices, Doras, Vasanthas, Chantis, and Yua Haos suffer today in America.

2- I think the main cause of moderm slavery  is immigration
People specially women they want to find better life condictions  by immigrating to the riches country in the world. They try to find money to send to they relatives but once they get here they get trick and they fall for it. Woman falls for prostituiction and man falls for hard work .3-If I was an agent I would try to cut the bad by the source , I would try to find the main boss and try to capture him with  the help of Interpool  or FBI.            TYPES OF SLAVERY1-CHATTEL SLAVERY is closest to the slavery that prevailed in early American history. Chattel slaves are considered their masters property exchanged for things like trucks or money and expected to perform labor and sexual favors. Once of age, their children are expected to do the same. Chattel slavery is typically racially-based; in the North African country of Mauritania, for example, black Africans serve the lighter-skinned Arab-Berber communities. Though slavery was legally abolished there in 1980, today 90,000 slaves continue to serve the Muslim Berber ruling class. Similarly, in the African country of Sudan, Arab northerners are known to raid the villages in the South killing all the men and taking the women and children to be auctioned off and sold into slavery. 2-DEBT BONDAGE, or bonded labor, is the most widely practiced form of slavery around the world. In Southeast Asia, where it is most prevalent, debt bondage claims an estimated 15 to 20 million victims. The staggering poverty there forces many parents to offer themselves or their own children as collateral against a loan. Though they are promised they will work only until their debt is paid off, the reality is much grimmer. Thanks to inflated interest rates and fresh debts incurred while being fed and housed, the debt becomes impossible to pay off. As a result, it is often inherited by the bonded laborers children, perpetuating a vicious cycle that can claim several generations.3-SEX SLAVERY finds women and children forced into prostitution. Many are lured by false offers of a good job and then beaten and forced to work in brothels. In Southeast Asia, however, it is not uncommon to find women coerced by their own husbands, fathers, and brothers to earn money for the men in the family to pay back local money lenders. In other cases, victims pay tens of thousands of dollars to get to another country and are then forced into prostitution in pay off their own debts. In still others, women or girls are plainly kidnapped from their home countries. The sex slavery trade thrives in Central and Eastern Europe and in North America. An estimated two million women and children are sold into sex slavery around the world every year.4-FORCED LABOR often results when individuals are lured by the promise of a good job but instead find themselves subjected to slaving conditions working without payment and enduring physical abuse, often in harsh and hazardous conditions. Victims include domestic workers, construction workers, and even human mine detectors. Migrant workers are particularly vulnerable, as their constant changes of location make the organized crime rings that traffic them difficult to bust.    FACTS OF SLAVERY:A literature search shows that modern slavery and human trafficking are currently, and have been for decades, a global problem that should be of global concern. The addition of GIS and location-based services may in the future be used to enhance and/or streamline these illegal and unethical business practices, but the fact that exploitation of humans is already a significant problem and detriment to society cannot be ignored. These practices need to be dealt with now- swiftly and decisively. The following provides background into modern human slavery and trafficking,
including some statistics and organizations that are dedicated to helping victims and
stopping the atrocities of slavery and trafficking. These practices often include (but are by no means limited to) the utilization of minors as soldiers, camel jockeys, prostitutes, and beggars, none of which are how a child should spend their days.
In technical terms, slavery is the forced exploitation of a human being against
his or her will whereas trafficking specifically pertains to the transportation of this person in a fraudulent manner, for the purpose of enslavement, most often in illegal activities.
For more information regarding modern forms of slavery please refer to
Fact Sheet No. 14
from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations.

The Numbers:

  • 600,000-800,000 trafficked internationally each year(1)
  • 14,500-17,500 into the U.S every year(1)
  • 80% of these are women and children(1)
  • $9 billion business worldwide (Paulk, 2005)
  • In the top 3 revenue earners for organized crime (Leach, 2004)
  • 1.2 million children trafficked every year (2)
  • 27 million slaves world wide (Leach, 2004)
  • In 1850 slaves cost $40,000 (todays dollar), today they only cost $30
    (Bales, 1999)
  • 2004: 7000 traffickers prosecuted, 3000 convicted (3)
  • Most common type: debt bondage
  • Fastest growing: trafficking
  • Maximum Jail Time for trafficking: 20 yrs-life, depending on offense (4)
  • Convicted traffickers must "provide full restitution to victims" (4)

Dear Mr. President,Mr. President, I believe that slavery in the modern world is the biggest problem we face today. Millions of men, women, and children twice the population of Rhode Island is being held against their will as human slaves. Modern day slaves are often held in physical bondage. According to the Anti-Slavery international there are over 20 million people in bondage. The UNICEF estimates that 200,000 children from west and central Africa are being sold into slavery each year. Slavery is going on in places that it is banned from. Women from Eastern Europe are being forced into prostitution. Children are being trafficked between countries in Africa and men are being forced to work on Brazilian estates. There are all different types of slavery that exists today Bonded labor, Early and forced marriage, Forced labor, Slavery by descent, Trafficking, and Worst forms of child labor. Countries suffering from depression or economical problems are havens for human trafficking. Forced labor occurs in at least 90 cities across the United States. As you can see, its an enormous issue but one that is caused by the following factors, because the victims are manipulated into believing that there would be better pay and working conditions in foreign countries, people are vulnerable due to natural disasters in there home country,Certain cultural or social practices also contribute to it. Finally Mr. President we must adopt the following actions in order to end the problem. I recommend that the US government should set stricter rules and enforce the ones we already have. They should check unidenfied ships and talk to the United Nations and come up with ways of trying to stop this problem. But that isnt enough, Mr. President. Individual people must do there own part too, such as trying not to buy as much things made from slave labor, writing letters to a higher authority in our country, if you know someone who is a human slave or know someone who is a master of a slave you should speak up.

Kayla Greenwood  To The President of the U.S                I would like to talk to you about the issue with slavery. Slavery is very big in the U.S even though it is illegal. Slavery is happening all over the world and nobody is doing anything about it. It happens in China, Mexico, and Vietnam (the most) and other 35 states. Slaves are being forced to work for cheap labor working in sweatshops, hotels, and restaurants as well as agricultural and domestic work. 46% of those trapped in forced labor in America are found in prostitution and sex services. Sexual exploitation of children represents 3%. When slaves work for their money they are charged fees for food and transportation, they stay locked up by their employers then beaten to prevent them from escaping. They are robbed for their names and numbers and are given fake ones. Women and daughters of the men were put to housekeep or childcare in places across the boarder. Put in cheap trailers or in houses of middle class neighbors and work at nightclubs. By directing all relevant United States agencies to combine forces to ultimate trafficking and help rehabilitate its victims is good but what can you really trying to do to stop slavery. You can have people sneak around where slavery could take place and catch them in the act. Have others sign a petition to ban slavery for good. Stop trade with other countries that have slaves involved in the making of the products. Now you may know what really happens around the world involving slavery. In hope you will be as concerned as I am and try to do something about it.aww

1.An Arab trader sold 132 former slaves, women and children, for $13,200 (in Sudanese money) to a member of Christian Solidarity International. When they worked they got very little pay and worked with inhumane working conditions.Modern-day slaves can be found laboring as servants or concubines in Sudan, as child "carpet slaves" in India. The world's oldest human rights organization, there are currently over 20 million people in bondage. According to 1993 U.S. State Department estimates, up to 90,000 blacks are owned by North African Arabs. Animist tribes in southern Sudan are frequently invaded by Arab militias from the North. Kidnapped from their villages when they are as young as five years old, between 200,000 and 300,000 children are held captive in locked rooms and forced to weave on looms for food. In a 1992 law passed by the Pakistani government, landlords are barred from offering loans in exchange for work or to hold workers hostage to their debts. In the Dominican Republic, the collection of slaves for the busy harvest season is more random. Accounts of human beings as modern slaves extend beyond those described here, and include young girls sold into prostitution in Thailand and slave chattels in Mauritania. When the number of workers does not meet the harvest's demand, the Dominican army is set into action. The army's captives are forced to work at gunpoint and beaten if they try to escape.

2.The owners of slaves cant do the work for themselves, so they buy slaves. Slaves gets work done so much easier. They could also just not know better, like grown up just knowing to have slaves when older.

3. We should kill all slave owners, and free all slaves from this. They could also do what we do over here, and pass a law for slavery. Slaves could think of a plan to take the slave owners over <kill them> with there own weapons. Get on a boat while a child and come to u.s.a. While getting whipped plan to have ppl kill the whiper wit spears.

Dear Mr. President,

I believe that slavery is the BIGGEST problem in our world today. Do you have any idea what they do to get these slaves? People pay to get a slave, also they have children working not only adults children to, they are being controlled by people. Slaves are human beings too they dont deserve to be treated like animals. They are getting forced to do things. There is a type of slavery called bonded labor. People are being tricked into becoming a boned labor by taking a loan (or being tricked into taking a loan) for as little as the cost of medicine for a sick child. To pay back the money they are forced to work seven hours everyday of the year. They get basic food and shelter as a payment for their work. They dont get real money so they can never pay the loan off which means it gets passed down generations. I really think that you should do something about this. What I think you should do is arrest all the slave owners and they should all be sentenced death they are illegally taking control over innocent people. as for individuals if they know that something is going on they should say something so all this could be stopped.

In 2001, as many as 4 million men, women and children in the world were bought, sold, and transported to work as slaves. At this moment, millions of men, women, and children are being held against their will as modern-day slaves. 10,000 or more people are forced to toil in sweat shops, clean homes, labor on farms, or work as prostitutes or strippers in at least 90 cities across the United States. Modern-day slaves can be found laboring as servants or concubines in Sudan, as child "carpet slaves" in India, or as cane-cutters in Haiti and southern Pakistan. Women from Eastern Europe work in prostitution, children are traded between West African countries and men are forced to work as slaves on Brazilian agricultural estates. Women and children make up the overwhelming majority of victims, typically being sold into the international sex trade for prostitution, sex tourism and other commercial sexual services, and into forced labor situations.

Slavery exists today despite the fact that it is banned in most of the countries where it is practiced. There are many types of slavery. Trafficking is the trade of women, children and men from one area to another to work as slaves. Worst forms ofchild labor affect children that work as slaves that are harmful to their health and welfare. Early and forcedmarriage affects women and girls who are forced to get married without choice and are often victims of physical violence.

There should be more groups supporting and helping out to stop this.

One problem that has gotten big is human trafficking. Not only is it found in other world countries but the United States. There are many types of slavery that exist today. It comes in many forms not just physical abuse and being owned by someone and taken all your rights away but also there is a type of slavery called bonded labour. Its when youre being tricked into taking a loan for just getting medicine. Also there is forced marriages for young girls. Another fact I found was child labour when children around the world have to work in hard conditions. There is also slavery by descent which is where people are born into a slave class and they automatically have to work as a slave.   I think that slavery is still going today because they owed money for the government and they were bonded labours. Also many poor countries are in high demand for cheap labor. If people who are know slaves want to leave they cant because the people in charge threaten to confiscate their passports and turn them over to the authorities. There are also a large number of children that have to be slaves. I think that there should be laws against it and were should hold speeches about and make it more known to people so that they can know whats happening.

In the day of today there are 27 million people enslaved all around the world today. Yes, that includes the United States and in countries on all six inhabited continents its all happening. CHATTEL SLAVERY is one of the biggest slavery going on in the world right on. Chattel slavery is the type of slavery that for the type of color you are thats how you get sold. Though slavery was legally abolished there in 1980, today 90,000 slaves continue to serve the Muslim Berber ruling class. Villages in the South killed all the men and taking the women and children to be auctioned off and sold into slavery. DEBT BONDAGE is the 2sd worst slavery going on in the world today. In Southeast Asia, where it is most prevalent, debt bondage claims an estimated 15 to 20 million victims. They would made you sell one of your children to slavery and thats would of paid off. SEX SLAVERY finds women and children forced into prostitution. An estimated two million women and children are sold into sex slavery around the world every year. The sex slavery trade thrives in Central and Eastern Europe and in North America.

FORCED LABOR often results when individuals are lured by the promise of a good job but instead find themselves subjected to slaving conditions. Working without payment and enduring physical abuse, often in harsh and hazardous conditions.

THERE ARE MILLIONS OF MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD WHO ARE FORCED TO LEAD LIVES AS SLAVES. TODAY THIS ACTION IS VERY OFTEN CALLED SLAVERY THE CONDITIONS ARE THE SAME. PEOPLE ARE SOLD LIKE OBJECTS AND FORCED TO WORK FOR LITTLE OR NO PAY. SLVERY STILL EXISTS TODAY BUT IT IS BANNED IN MOST COUNTRIES BUT IT IS STILL PRACTICED THERE. MOST SLAVES SRE FORCED TO WORK NO MATTER THEIR CONDITIONS. THEY ARE ALSO OWNED AND CONTROLLED BY AN EMPLOYER. THEY ARE TREATED AS COMMODITY AND SOLD AS PROPERTY.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SLAVERY AND THEY ARE BONDED LABOUR, EARLY AND FORCED MARRIAGE, FORCED LABOUR, SLVERY BY DESCENT, TRAFFICKING, AND WORST FORMS OF CHILD LABOUR. PEOPLE BECOME BONDED LABOUR BY TAKING OR BEING TRICKED INTO TAKING A LOAN FOR AS LITTLE THE COST OF MEDICINE FOR A SICK CHILD. EARLY AND FORCED MARRIAGE AFFECTS WOMEN AND GIRLS WHO ARE MARRIED WITHOUT CHOICE AND FORCED INTO SERVITUDE OFTEN ACCOMPANIED BY VIOLENCE.

FORCED LABOUR AFFECTS PEOPLE WHO ARE ILLEGALLY RECRUITED BY INDIVIDUALS, GOVERNMENTS AND POLITICALS AND ARE FORCED TO WORK. SLAVERY BY DESCENT IS WHEN PEOPLE ARE EITHER BORN INTO SLAVE CLASS OR ARE FROM A GROUP THAT SOCIETY VIEWS AS SUITED TO BEING USED AS SLAVE LABOUR. TRAFFICKING IS THE TRANSPORT AND TRADE OF PEOPLE FROM ONE AREA TO ANOTHER FOR THE PURPOSE OF FORCING THEM INTO SLAVERY. WORST FORMS OF CHILD LABOUR AFFECTS 126 MILLION CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD THAT IS HARMFUL TO THEIR HEALTH AND WELFARE.

Dear Mr. President,

I have been doing this investigation on modern- slavery and Ive discovered a lot of unknown facts. Slavery was a problem back then and is still a problem today. There are about 27 million slaves in the world today, which is more then ever before.  The rise in slavery happened because of the increase in the worlds economy and societies.

There are three trends that have contributed mostly to the rise of modern-slavery.  First is the recent population explosion, which tripled the number of people in the world. Second, is the rapid social and economic change, which has put people in places where there is no safety net and no job security. The third is all of the corruption around the world, allows slavery to go on unpunished.

An average slave costs $90, which is $39,910 less then the average slave back then.  In the 1800s it was hard to capture slaves, but nowadays its easier because a lot of people around the world are facing economic problems, which makes them very vulnerable.  Since they are so cheap, slaves are today are not considered a major investment worth maintaining.

There are a lot of different types of slavery. There is bonded labour which people become bonded labourers by taking or being tricked into taking a loan, most dont have the money to pay them back so theyre forced to work long hours for as long as a year.

There is also early and forced marriage, which are women or girls who are forced to get married to people they dont even know and theyre sometimes subjected to physical violence. idea

Slave traders are transferring people all over. They are forced to work for little payment. Slaves are limited to the extent where they cant move without their masters knowledge. The slaves are even forced to worship who their masters tell them to or are punished.

In the modern world to day slavery still exist. Although it is not as wide spread and known about it still remains a problem. In different places in Africa, and around the world children, will be kid napped from there families and put in to military camps and literally brain wash these kids and teach them how to kill. Normally the people they children kill are there own family members and their community. There are more than 300,000 children currently taking part in approximately 36 armed conflicts around the globe.

From: http://www.anti-slaverysociety.addr.com/toccsoldiers.htm

Another problem that exist in the world today and not just in Africa is forced labor. Not to long ago in my city was a sweatshop raid where illegal immigrants where taken away and deported back to there countries. In the later investigation it showed that the condition that they where being forced to work in was terrible. They where being forced to work some shifts over 18 hours and where to remain in their station. But thats just one of the better stories. In other places in the world forced labor is a practice of compulsory labor exacted by a state or agencies of a state, other than as punishment for a criminal offence. Today it involves forcible recruitment by the Tatmadaw (the Burmese army)

Mr. President, I believe that slavery in the modern world is the biggest problem we face today. Day and day children live their life cleaning, harvesting, and being forced to do things by their masters. The slavery in the southern Sudan is the most horrifying for me for example in 1993 about 90,000 black people were sold for 15 dollars each year. Also little girls at the age of four, were usually worked till they couldnt anymore, beaten, or raped and if they refused to be raped they would be beaten till they die or until they submitted. The slaves were tricked the masters would trick the slave by saying they were going to help by giving food and shelter and take them to their land. The older women were injected with drugs and put in a room to clean until they say, after about two year the owner becomes bored of her for any reason like beaten her or if she dies over drug abuse they would replace her with a new women.

As you can see, it is an enormous issue, but one that is caused by the following factors: The fact of feeling like a bigger person, they relied on the slaves to support their economy which was producing crops, tobacco and especially cotton. Last but not least the other reason why slavery is taken place in the world is racism between the blacks and whites.

Finally, Mr. President, we must adopt the following actions in order to end this problem. I recommend that the US government should crack down on the masters and send them to jail for ruining lives and abusing them. But that isnt enough, Mr. President. Individual people must do their part too, such as individuals should search around the world and make sure we living right because its not fair for them were living good on 2008 and how about them.

To the honorable President of the United States,

Mr. President, I believe that slavery in the modern world is the biggest problem we face today. UNICEF estimates that 200,000 children from West and Central Africa are sold into slavery each year. Also According to 1993 U.S. State Department estimates, up to 90,000 blacks are owned by North African Arabs, and are often sold as property in a deriving slave trade for a minium of $15 a person. Tribes in southern Sudan are constantly invaded by Arab militaries and once they get there they kill the men and enslave the women and children. As you can see, it is an enormous issue, but one that is caused by the following factors: [then list your three causes here].  Finally, Mr. President, we must adopt the following actions in order to end this problem.  I recommend that the US government should [explain how the government should fix the problem here].  But that isnt enough, Mr. President.  Individual people must do their part too, such as [explain what individuals should do to fix the problem here].

We should also try to influence the rest of the world by talking to their leaders and showing them points that were brought up.But that isnt enough, Mr. President.  Individual people must do their part too, such as informing the law and other people when and if they notice it.

Who is this?

Dear President,
I am forced to believe that slavery in the modern world is a big issue in the world today. Many of the country today are still having poor defenseless people work for them as slaves, low standards and low pay. These people are locked away from what they know they should have and that is freedom. They are not allowed to make even the simpliest of movemnets without the knowledge of the person who owns them. These slaves do not even have the right to worship who they want because they fear they will get punished for what they do, they basically fear for their own life because they dont know if what they are doing is wrong or not. As it shows slavery is becoming a serious problem in many states. Many of these people are becoming slaves because they are being shipped from different countries and are being sold off to people with money for no pay and to work on fields while these so called rich people are wasting away watchin them. So in conclusion Mr. President i believe that you should have these disgraceful actions taken care of by any means nessecary, and if any person found holding people as slaves should be forced to pay money for every person they own and all the physical and emotional damage forced upon these people. Mr. President you should have all the citizens you have in your state help  other places relize that what they are doing is wrong.
