#13 - War Diaries Today

If you've followed the news, you know we've been at war for over 5 years in Iraq and almost 7 years in Afghanistan... If you want to know HOW and WHY we've gone to war in Iraq, there is a really good documentary (that you can watch online about it) here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/bushswar/.  But what we've been looking at yesterday was how war affected average soldiers in the Civil War.  Today, I'd like to compare writings from soldiers then and now.

Blogs are modern diaries.  People can update them daily and include pictures, stories and videos.  Many blogs focus on specific themes, but the ones we're going to look at are from soldiers.  First, I'd like you to read some articles about military blogs here: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1106331,00.html and here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6115600/.  Try to understand what their purpose is and why soldiers NEED to write down what they experience.  Think about what you would put in your own blog.

Then I would like you to look at some examples of soldier's blog sites themselves, such as: http://misoldierthoughts.blogspot.com/, http://bouhammer.com/wordpress/, and http://gocomics.typepad.com/the_sandbox/2008/05/memoriesname-rn.html

I do have to tell you that I am not responsible for what they write.  Everyone has their own perspective AND experience.  If there is anything offensive, let me know immediately.  These are REAL people in dangerous situations, so be open.

So... here's the assignment:

1) Read the links above.  Scan through some blog entries.
2) Begin a discussion below by sharing your thoughts and opinions about what you've read and learned about their experiences.  Post 'em.  I am looking for each student to post 5-10 times.  Ask questions, share stories, etc.
3) In a brief parapgraph, explain what you think is similar and different from letters and diaries of the Civil War from soldiers compared to blogs today.  I would like you to choose one entry from each, select a few passages, and quote it in your answer.  In other words, give examples.  Obviously, do NOT post anything inappropriate.  Thanks.

The Civil War soldier might take a few moments to write to there  family. These letters often contain accounts of battles, life in camp, and general news. But many soldiers, as they marched off to face the enemy, had left behind a wife ,and there family  to them they would have to give up there life to there family and freedom. Civil war was a big war when it going on. Many have died but then want was right for them and for family. From the war now we have better guns and everything. Everything have been upgrade from the years have gone by. Time by time things have change New Laws new goverment and much more. Back then they have cannon that was powerful to them back then by now Our powerful thing is bomb and others. It sad that we have to go to war. We have some many presidents.

the soldiers in the civil war wrote down a play by play on what they did on that day..and kept records of what they went  through. they did this to have answers to any questions future settlers might have

Comparing blogs with letters and diaries from soldiers now and back then. Back then they couldnt necessarily send there message they would write them in hopes of sending them. With blogs u could write anything to anyone and they would get it. A similarity is they go through the same things. A man from then and now could write about how he was sick for so many days. They could write about what happened that day. In blogs they go into greater detail with what happened then u would write in a diary. A blog and a diary are also similar because they both can stick with you as long as you would like it. A man explains that a little boy in Iraq brought up a hand grenade to him and said, Give me Money. They were paid for retrieving weapons. They would also show their loved ones they cared by writing them a message on how they miss them and wished they were home.

#13 War Diaries Today By Nathen Brito

On the pages that I read I learned some kl stuff like for example we went to Iraq for no reason we got a false report on nuclear bombs. I also learned that we were searching for the bombs and never found a single bomb. Another interesting fact was that we killed Sadam when he had nothing really to do with the war. Well those are the most interesting things that I found

TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY

Thomas D. Newton was a soldier in the war. Thomas like all soldiers wanted to be back home once he was away from his family for a while he had a sister that he wrote to when he was able to.

Zachary Scott another soldier that is at war. Feels the same way about being back home its  just that he has a wife and two kids at home.

There arent a lot of similarities between the Civil War compared to blogs today. The main things are that they miss their families and they want to go home. They also are fighting to change the ways of other people. There are a lot of differences for instance they are different places America and Iraq are totally different places. There is also totally new technology and newer strategies then there used to be. They also have to deal with the innocent civilians in Iraq who sometimes attack with weapons that they secretly acquire. Even though all these changes have happened the soldiers are still Americans who have families.
