The Future of Technology

Sources: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/kidsonline/, http://inventors.about.com/od/fstartinventions/tp/Future_Techno.htm, http://www.darpa.mil/ and more.

Background: Culture is strongly influenced in the modern world by the tools we use - our technology.  Computers control almost all of the modern world.  Communications is almost instantaneous globally.  Transportation is achieved relatively cheaply and easily for the first time in the history of the world.  Energy is abundant.  Weapons today are the most destructive ever imagined.  All of this is because of technological advances... but what does this mean for the future?  We're not simply going to discuss this question, because it is too general.  What we are going to discuss here is how technology will affect cultural groups in the future.  It's impact on people, their thoughts, their religion, their politics, their poverty or wealth, their health and standard of living... and more.

Rules: Since the class is so small, we will participate in discussion in class and online.  Your participation is graded, so please do your best.  In class, we will evaluate our own impact on the discussion through a rubric and here, in the online forum, we will guage our participation by the number of posts and their significance on the discussion.  I'll begin by throwing out some general questions, but the discussion can branch off in different directions if necessary.  The goal is to share ideas, ask questions, make suggestions and grow through our collaborative "talk".

Intro Questions:

1.  Is techonology helpful or hurtful to the future?  Give examples.
2.  Will access to, or knowledge of, technology create different cultures?
3.  How will technology challenge beliefs around the world?  Give examples.
4.  Imagine the future 100 years from now.  How will technology affect culture?

just to emphasize the topic brought up about the generation gap when it comes to technology, this is a few examples from an article titled "parents just don't understand"

My mom finally got a cell phone with a camera. She asked me if she had to buy special film.
-Mike from Kean

My mom was using her laptop when she called me over, complaining that something was wrong. I arrived to find her frantically clicking a "Print This Article" button on a webpage. "It won't print!" she explained. We don't have a printer.
From Diggory, Beijing

I was behind a woman in the self-checkout line of the grocery store who was trying to scan a single donut. It was just an unwrapped donut in a napkin and she didn't understand why the laser wouldn't pick it up.
From Evan, Lipscomb University

My aunt was having computer problems and brought it over for me to fix. She just brought the monitor. And no cords.

Intro Questions:

1.  Is techonology helpful or hurtful to the future?  Give examples.

it's helpful because it makes life easier, in many different fields.

2.  Will access to, or knowledge of, technology create different cultures?

yes because certain groups of people will have technology while others won't, so their culture may be different.

3.  How will technology challenge beliefs around the world?  Give examples.

it will challenge beliefs by supporting different beliefs, and showing the facts that proove or disproove those beliefs.

4.  Imagine the future 100 years from now.  How will technology affect culture?

100 years from now technology will be extremely different from what it is now, there will be different ways to do things, industries (like travel, food, computers, school, etc.)will have changed, and people will be different because of new technology.

1. Is techonology helpful or hurtful to the future? Give examples.

Technology is very much helpful to the future. In our society, it is getting to the point where almost everyday life cannot be completed without technology. The future holds lots of new technology and all we are doing is waiting for it to happen. Pretty soon everything will be operated by technology.

2. Will access to, or knowledge of, technology create different cultures?

Most likely, the way our society is going nowadays, anything is possible.

3. How will technology challenge beliefs around the world? Give examples.

It would probably be challenging as to older generations like our grandparents and great grandparents who probably know what computers and iPods are but have no clue how to work them. it could be where some religions don't rely on technology at all so it would probably be interesting when it gets to the point where they have no choice but to.

4. Imagine the future 100 years from now. How will technology affect culture?

I believe that there would be less culture being expressed in peoples everyday lives because technology is taking over more and more everyday where we constantly rely on it to complete the day. culture would be bounced around a couple of times but it'll be like dinosaurs, we talk about them, we know about them but thats it.
