The Future of Multicultural Studies

Background: So, the year is almost over.  We just have finals and a few days left, but I'd like to start thinking about the next school year.  I will have two sections of Multicultural Studies (one in the fall and one in spring) and I would like your thoughts on what those courses can be like.

Assignment: Think of everything we've done this year: everything discussed and watched, all computer assignmnments and group projects, all topics, themes, issues and events, and all cultural groups and people studied.  1) Give me a list of things you liked in the class with explanations.  We also used the web quite a bit.  2) Make a list of 10 websites that you think would be good to use in the course next year.  Explain your reasons for your selections.  Finally, please 3) give me some constructive criticism on how the course can be improved.  Thanks!

1) I enjoyed a few units throughout the year, here is my list:
the future of science, the future of technology, farmingville, 2 towns of Jasper, new americans, Gandhi, & (my personal favorite) promises. I enjoyed these units because I found them interesting in one way or another.

2) library.thinkquest.org/5053/ (on animals thoughout the world)
www.diversitas.org/db/x.php?dbcode=pr&go=e&id=11305820  (Discrimination),
www.adventist.org/beliefs/statements/main_stat45.html (religions),
www.hrw.org/women/ (women's rights),
www.nytimes.com/2006/06/16/opinion/16ohanlon.html0 (current stat of iraq),
www.hatecrime.org/ ,
www.rwor.org/a/042/immigrants-struggle-changes-lessons.htm. (story of an immigrants struggle)

3) I would say to slow down the course, I found it very difficult to keep up with the work

Give me a list of things you liked in the class with explanations.  I liked being able to post assignments online. Makes it easier.Make a list of 10 websites that you think would be good to use in the course next year.  http://www.whatthebleep.com/. Awesome movie!http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2002/twotownsofjasper/index.html. Really anything PBS did.http://www.teachersagainstprejudice.org/. Very informativehttp://www.nameorg.org/National Association for Multicultural Education  http://youthviolence.edschool.virginia.edu/juvenile-violence/multiculturalissues.html Youth Violence Project - Multicultural Issueshttp://wilderdom.com/games/MulticulturalExperientialActivities.html, http://www.thunderbay.org/article/tictactogetherness--multicultural-games-for-children-139.asp, http://www.ga.k12.pa.us/academics/MS/6th/MCGAMES/Directory.htm different games you can play to explore different cultures. -http://dsc.discovery.com/ cant go wrong with the discovery channel.
http://www.couchsurfing.com/ like the road trip project, but you have to couch surf the whole way!
Give me some constructive criticism on how the course can be improved.

A few less movies, and more discussions. Movies tend to get a little boring.

1) some of the things that we went over in class, that stuck out for me were the topics like:
Indigenous Peoples of the Rainforestß--My favorite topic! (I loved the documentary!)
Promises- the children in Iraq
The two towns of Jasper
Shirley Chisolm
And The confessions of Rosalee

2) Some of the Websites I would suggest are:
http://www.sights-and-culture.com/
http://www.usd204.k12.ks.us/bshspages/multi/-dedicated to talking about racism and other cultures
http://www.culturalstudies.net/
www.discovery.com
www.History.com

3) I enjoyed this course, very much but I definitely agree that we went along with topics a little quickly which got me confused as 2 what I was doing or what was done I guess. Other then the fast pace, your class was very interesting Mr.Everett!!

1. I enjoyed the documentaries. The indigenous tribes, The Palestinian and the Israeli conflict, and "What the Bleep". They were all very informative.

2.
1. www.pbs.org
2. www.npr.org
3. dsc.discovery.com
4. www.hatecrime.org
5. www.colorado.edu/journals/standards/
6. www.history.com/
7. www.nytimes.com/
8. www.washingtonpost.com/
9. www.cnn.com/
10. www.indigenouspeople.net/

3. There were too many assignments all one after another (4-5 times a week) this sometimes allows the students to become bored and end up just "going through the motions" and not really reading and learning about the assignments. use less assignments so students can take there time and really get the most out of each assignment instead of rushing through it. there should be (1- 2) assignments a week.

Blaine,

Each website should explain HOW it can be used in the course.  Your list of newspapers doesn't have any direct connection to any particular themes studied in this course.  Please put more effort into your work.

Well, the way we were being tought was not the traditional READ READ READ, WRITE WRITE WRITE!

It was easier to understand what was going on because you were very clear with your lessons. You went very deep with details, which I liked.

Of cource, not any teacher can teach this way, it requires someone truely into what they do, or someone who actually cares what the students learn.

In my opinion, nothing grabs my attention more then how you took advantage of technology. The daily routine of projectors and computers made the class an enjoyable one.

Mr. E. = #1

.... I often wanted to be in school after I graduated.
