Assignment #11: Final Exam Essay Questions

Below are all 9 of the essay questions that could be asked on the final exam on Friday, January 18th.  Of these 9 questions, I will randomly choose 4.  Of those 4 that will be on the exam, you must answer 2 fully.  Each answer must be written in essay form for 25 points each (50 points total).  I will give you the rubric for the essays as well.

1.     Throughout American history, Americans have struggled to define and expand freedom.  Many of the greatest advances came as a result of years of effort and were announced in declarations or proclamations, or were codified into law.  From the list of documents, amendments, and proclamations below, choose two (2).  For each one, explain:

·        what it was or did
·        why it was created
·        how it helped to expand freedom

2.     At the start of the American Revolution it appeared that the British had a number of significant advantages (military and non-military) over the Americans.  Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of both sides at the start of the war, and discuss the major factors that enabled the Americans to defeat the British and win their independence.

3.     The United States Constitution was created by the Founding Fathers with several unique features that have helped it to endure for the past 200+ years.

4.     The Industrial Revolution and the introduction of the factory system in the United States in the early 1800s resulted intremendous economic and social changes.  Look at the list below and think about how each item listed was affected by the growth of the factory system.

5.     A number of key events in the early 19th century helped to bring about the Civil War in 1861.   Look at the list of events below.   Choose 3 events and explain how each helped to bring about the Civil War.

6.     During the early 19th century the Abolitionist Movement gained support from a wide variety of people, and these people used many different methods to achieve their goal.  At the same time, those who supported slavery took actions to defend their peculiar institution.

a.  Identify several of the leading abolitionists and describe the methods that they used. 
b.  Discuss the strategies that were used by the defenders of slavery to oppose the abolitionists.

7.     In April 1861 when the Civil War began it appeared that the Northern side had numerous military, political and economic advantages compared to the South and that the war would not last very long.

Name the major advantages of each side at the start of the Civil War.
b.     Discuss the factors that enabled the South to extend the war to last four years and come much closer to winning the war than it seemed they should have.

The Gettysburg Address, 1863"Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. In the Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln refers to the nation as having a new birth of freedom.

Explain what President Lincoln meant when he called for a new birth of freedom. You may support your answer with information from the Gettysburg Address and your knowledge of American history.

Explain why Lincoln believed a unified nation should be preserved. You may support your answer with quotes from the passage above.

9.     The right of citizens to participate in government through voting is an essential part of American democracy.  Four amendments to the Constitution that involved voting rights are listed in the box below:
15th Amendment
19th Amendment
24th Amendment
26th Amendment

a.  Describe who has the right to vote in the United States today.
b.  Explain how voting rights have changed since the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1788.
c.   Choose one amendment from the box and explain how it extended the voting rights of American citizens.
