Assignment #27: Great Leap (China)

1.  Define the difference between reform and revolution. How do revolutions encompass social, economic, and political reforms? Ask students to share what they know about past revolutions.

2. While watching the program, explain how the Communists were able to achieve victory and write down specific ways the Chinese revolution changed ordinary people's lives.

3. Before communism, Chinese peasant Hu Benxu recalls, "There was justice for the rich but none for the poor...You can't believe how badly the poor were treated." Did the communists bring justice for the poor? Based on Qi Youyi's quotation, do you think he believes the actions he describes were just? Why or why not? Do you think that they were just? Why or why not?

4. [ACTIVITY]  Research the May 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square. First, divide the class into four groups: 1) supporters of the Chinese democracy movement, 2) communist leaders, 3) American reporters, and 4) Chinese reporters. After the groups research their assigned roles, have the first two groups present their philosophies and goals to their followers or constituents. Then have the second two groups report their versions of the speeches for their newspapers. Compare and discuss the results.

Reform is done through the leaders, revolutions are done through the people. Revolts, civil unrest.
2. While watching the program, explain how the Communists were able to achieve victory and write down specific ways the Chinese revolution changed ordinary people's lives.
The communists use propaganda to gain the support of the people, and treated them well in the beginning!
They did not bring justice, they simply gave them land and food in the beginning to gain their support until they had complete control. The government seemed to always betray its people and end up taking away whatever they gave.
4. [ACTIVITY] Research the May 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square. First, divide the class into four groups: 1) supporters of the Chinese democracy movement, 2) communist leaders, 3) American reporters, and 4) Chinese reporters. Then have the second two groups report their versions of the speeches for their newspapers. Compare and discuss the results.
1) High school people
2) Jiang Zemin
3) Some American reporters
4) Some Chinese reporters
THE PEOPLE DONT LIKE CHINA! THE PEOPLE WANT NEW GOVERNMENT CHINA WANT POWER COMMUNIST!

1.Define the difference between reform and revolution. How do revolutions encompass social, economic, and political reforms? Ask students to share what they know about past revolutions.

Revolutions is basically a big change it is mostly associated with riots, uprisings, and wars while reform (though still change) is done through the economy, jobs, and the are the goverments' doing (usually)

2. While watching the program, explain how the Communists were able to achieve victory and write down specific ways the Chinese revolution changed ordinary people's lives.

They achieved power by war.. how they gained influence was by propganda and by treating the poor how they liked.

Yes I honestly do believe that commuism helped the poor. Though I think the propagnda, getting rid of the current leaders/power, and Mao were all insane, I do believe they did a good job helping the poor through community lunch, jobs, and money. Plus techincally by killing the rich they were doing what the poor man probably would want

4. [ACTIVITY]Research the May 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square. First, divide the class into four groups: 1) supporters of the Chinese democracy movement, 2) communist leaders, 3) American reporters, and 4) Chinese reporters. 1)

So I have a clear account of all the abuses of power
And the memories of my homeland have now gone sour
And I only got one weapon, its so plain for me to see
My only weapon I call.. poetry

They wouldn't let me write about my opinions about the state
And freedom of expression they would never tolerate
And the military secrets that I never did steal
I didn't start no violence, and there was nobody that I killed

So I have a clear account of all the abuses of power
And the memories of my homeland have now gone sour
And I only got one weapon, its so plain for me to see
My only weapon I call.. poetry

And I don't even know why
The truth seems like a lie
In my cell there is no sky
When I was arrested in Shanghai

2) China and the goverment will stay how it is now and were willing to "supress" the protest at the Tiananmen square and by supress I mean kill and arrest members of the movement for chinese democracy left and right. It is for the best because if we just let these traitors run around civilians are in danger.

3. For the most part the China has erupted into a scene of violence after the Chinese goverment ordered militaty force. As far as we know about 300-500 protesters have been either injured or killed and the tolls are on the rise.

4. The protesting has become a threat to the state and have erupted into violence and rioting. The chinese goverment had no choice but to intervene in the matters. for the safty of the puplic about 100 have been injured including some troops

1.Reform seems to be less of a change when revolution seems like a bug change.

2. They used propaganda and acted as if they would be good to them.

3.Communism did help the poor. In the beginning they acted like they were going to help them out and gave them things they needed.

1.  Define the difference between reform and revolution. How do revolutions encompass social, economic, and political reforms? Ask students to share what they know about past revolutions.
            - well if your in a reform you belonged to a group but for revolution you act against  the government or authority
2. While watching the program, explain how the Communists were able to achieve victory and write down specific ways the Chinese revolution changed ordinary people's lives.
-the communists where able to achieve victory because they reflected the  poor people who didnt have money they think like the poor so they get them to do anything they want them too. The revolution made people share and work together as one
3. Before communism, Chinese peasant Hu Benxu recalls, "There was justice for the rich but none for the poor...You can't believe how badly the poor were treated."             -well no because it says that the poor wasnt taken care of very well so the communists did bring justice to the poor, yes I think youis believes that his actions where just and that there was a good change in china.
-I think his the just where good to change china way of life and for the poor to get what they need

1. Reform is the reorganization of a group's operations based on its current system. Revolution is the reorganization of a group's operations into a whole new system. Because revolution organizes a whole new system, it requires reforming EVERY part of the system in some way.

2. The Communists were able to achieve victory by swaying public opinion. While the Nationalists were in the cities and did not appear to care for the peasants of the countryside, the Communists would work alongside the farmers and sleep in the streets instead of taking over their homes for shelter. This helped garner public support for the Communist movement. Eventually, the Nationalists were overwhelmed and forced out.

3. The Communists did bring justice for the poor. Based on the quote, I can only believe that Hu Benxu felt justified because of how many poor people died while the rich lived in luxury. However, I cannot condone his actions. The rich were killed as revenge for allowing the poor to die, but many landlords could have been loving, caring people who took care of their people. However, all rich people were killed regardless of their previous actions. Therefore, I cannot believe it is justified.

-reform is the improvement or amendment of what is wrong, corrupt, unsatisfactory and revoultion is an overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed.

2. While watching the program, explain how the Communists were able to achieve victory and write down specific ways the Chinese revolution changed ordinary people's lives.
-they were able to ahchieve victory because they licved among the poor instead of invading homes. they gained the trust and support of the poor.

- i believe that they did bring justice to the poor. i dont think that the rich should have been killed or punished just so the poor could be justified. everyone should be treated equally regardless social status.

1.  Reform is to change something has a a problem with it.  To improve something that doesn't function properly or has an injustice to it.  Revolution is an overthrow of something that sometimes requires violence.  It can also be done peacefully too.  It all depends on the situation.  Some do require violence though such as the American and French revolutions.
2.  They lived among the poor and down trotted people.  They gained their trust and devotion.  So, when the poor followed them, they controlled the majority of the population.
3.  I believe that they did bring justice for the poor.  The richer people were finally held responsible for the bad things they were doing to toher people.  They were held accountable for all of their actions.  They didn't like it very much, but I believe it was the right thing.  Based on the man's quote he believes that they did a great job in bringing justice for them.  He is glad they began to take over.  He probably even wishes it happened a lot sooner.  You can tell he has been discriminated against by the upper class people of his nation.  He finally got sick of it.
4.  CLASS ACTIVITY.

Reform is changing the existing government, and revolution is overthrowing the government and establishing a new one.
2. While watching the program, explain how the Communists were able to achieve victory and write down specific ways the Chinese revolution changed ordinary people's lives.
The Communists were able to achieve victory because they sympathized with the rural poor. They changed ordinary peoples lives by giving them land, and promoting working together.
The communists sort of brought justice for the poor. They were able to manipulate the peoples thoughts and ideas, to make them believe they were being helped. That explains why Qi Youyi felt that the communists were just and actually good.

1. Reform is a smaller change that deals with business type things. A revolution is a big change that usually has something to do with the people
2. Most of the population was poor. They lived all around the poor and they had their support. Their support alone is the majority of what they needed.
3. I do believe so because the rich were starting to become held accountable for their actions as were the poor which is how it is supposed to be

Revolution is when a government is overthrown by the people to make a change. Reform is when the countries government is making the change.
2. While watching the program, explain how the Communists were able to achieve victory and write down specific ways the Chinese revolution changed ordinary people's lives.
They brain washed the people into believing that their rule would better the country as a whole and to turn in those that werent doing as the government said.

I believe that when communism came there was justice for no one. I think he believes the actions he describes. I think he believes them because he was poor. I think they werent just but thats the way life is.

Reform is just changing things in the government you don't like and bettering it, revolution is overthrowing the government.

2. While watching the program, explain how the Communists were able to achieve victory and write down specific ways the Chinese revolution changed ordinary people's lives.
Communists scared people into following them, because people were scared of the government no one steped up.  The Revolution changed peoples lives because the government controlled what the people ate, read, watched, worked, the government controlled everything.

3. Before communism, Chinese peasant Hu Benxu recalls, "There was justice for the rich but none for the poor...You can't believe how badly the poor were treated." In ways communists brought justice for the poor considering they fed the poor which helped them live.  In ways i think they were just because it was true the government kind of ignored what the poor was doing or living.
