Civil Rights Curriculum

Topics:

·         Problems to address:

o   Harassment, prejudice and discrimination at New Bedford High School

o   Closed-mindedness & apathy concerning the issues locally, nationwide and globally

o   Self-segregation (cliques) that are isolated from diversity

o   Lack of rights internationally (women, gays, child laborers, political prisoners, etc.)

o  

 

·         Empowerment (what teens can actually do about these issues)

·         Role models as examples of activism for a positive change

·         Community connections that demonstrate shared objectives

·         Public speaking, presentation-building, research and projects

·         Creatively integrating the arts (music, dance, poetry, literature, etc.)

·         Learn about the history of civil rights, injustice, activism, non-violence, etc.

·        

 

 

 

Schedule:

-          September

o   Raise awareness and recruit new team members.

o   Talk to students about what they think the issues are and what they would like to do about them.

-          October

o    Hispanic Heritage month.  

o   Connect with other clubs, schools, and organizations and talk about their as well as our goals for the year.

-          November

o   Research Native American culture and educate people about their culture then and their culture now.

o   Profile role models of Native American culture.

o   Native American Heritage month: Look at civil rights movements, womens rights movements, and more recent movements within history (gay, immigrants)

-          December

o   Identify and educate people the different types of prejudices and how they manifest themselves in communities, and how to prevent them.

o   Presentation(?)
