Assignment #3: French & Indian War DBQ

DBQ: In what ways did the French and Indian War (1754-1763) alter the political, economic and ideological relations between Britain and its colonies?  Use the documents and your knowledge of the period 1740-1766 in constructing your response.  [Source: 2004 AP ExamDirections: 1) Create a thesis and 2) make a list of outside information to support your thesis.

In order to continue our collaboration, what I would like you to do is to share each group's thesis and list of information.  I am specifically looking for many responses to each student's post.  You will receive 10 points for each DETAILED response (none like 'I like what you said.')  Let's collaborate and see if we, as a class, can agree on one PERFECT thesis and one PERFECT list of supporting evidence.

RE: Assignment #3: French & Indian War DBQ

This is my groups thesis:

The French and Indian war altered the political relations between Britain and the colonies due to the colonies wish of a republican government in place of the English monarchy. Also the war impacted the economic relations between the two, due to the imposition of various British taxes to pay for the war and the defenses put in place after it and as a result the colonists rebelled. This led to ideological relations because now the colonists started to think of the possibility of independence.

Group Members: Erin, Ashley, Breanne, Kelby, and Calisa. biggrin.gif

(To the other girls in the group: It is worded a tiny bit different from this morning but it was kind of one long sentence so I split it up a bit...I hope you don't mind)

my groups thesis: mitchell, alexa, andrew lackie.

The French and Indian war affected the relationship of the British and the American Colonies im almost everyway, politically, economically, and idelologically. The British begain to attempt to govern the coloniests again by putting political power's into the colonies and putting 10,000 British soldiers into American colonies. Also the British begain to put alot of taxes on the coloniests such as the Stamp Act of 1765 and the Sugar Act of 1764 to help pay off the war. The war made the Americans realize that they are not a weak force and combined with the British taxes and laws the colonies begain to rebel.

this is a good thesis statement, and i think we should combine some points between our groups.  We have a very wordy thesis statement but you have the facts and numbers in your first paragraph as well.  We didnt really introduce the subtopics yet, and i think you already seemed to have.

I would like to see a blending of your thesis statement and ours.  I think that the two statements express the same idea but your thesis statement is more explicit.  Our statement only describes a change in political relations but your statement is stronger because you state that the relationship is affected in many ways politically, economically and ideologically.

Great point ashley...They have already established specifics in their first paragraph while we mainly created a general overview, so together the thesis would touch all of the bases with citing all of our specific information while still leaving room for elaboration...Good Job!!

This is what we have for our thesis so far. We might end up changing in a little.

The French and Indian was altered the relationship between Britian and the colonies economically through the British taxation of the colonies, politically the colonies had to take on more political responsibilities, and ideologically it caused the colonists to eventually want independence.

How about something like this: simplify each of the sentences into a phrase that you can add to the main thesis...

"The French and Indian war altered the political relations between Britain and the colonies in three main ways: politically through republicanism, economically through taxation and ideologically through independence."

Maybe you can think of a better word than 'through'...

I can't believe it!  There it is.  That word...   ALOT.  furiousfuriousfurious

In all seriousness, I would suggest that for this thesis you keep your facts and information in the body of the essay.  You don't need to ever 'show the goods' before you've introduced your main idea.  Explain simply what you are going to refer to for each of the 3 points (political, economic and ideological) and only explain the details later.  Know what I mean?

This thesis has some good ideas but needs to be ironed out grammatically, so that there is subject/verb agreement in each of the phrases.  You also need to explain what you mean by 'taking on more responsibilities'.  You know what might help?  You all (all groups) might want to make a list of all of the economic changes, all of the political changes, and all of the ideological changes.  Then you could either summarize or consolidate.

Perhaps the French & Indian Wars most lasting repercussion was its political, economic, and ideological effect on the colonial people and Great Britain. These societal aspects and the relations between the two allies changed irreversibly in the wake of the French & Indian War. The advent of republicanism fueled the resentment of monarchial rule. Taxes imposed on the colonists by Britain eventually led to discontent and unrest among the Americans. And quite simply, the heightened responsibilities of the war convinced the colonists of their growing strength; it forced them to question whether or not the possibility of independence was as far-fetched as they would like to think it. Surpassing in magnitude anything that was done on the North American battlefield, these changes to the colonial - British kinship would have drastic effects on the fate of both nations, and a hand in the parting of mother and child.

I believe that this is well worded but my only concern is that for a thesis this may be a little long because for me personaly I prefer to be short and sweet for a thesis but thats just me.  biggrinAnyways, great job!!!biggrin

Taxes imposed on the colonists by Britain eventually led to discontent and unrest among the Americans. Surpassing in magnitude anything that was done on the North American battlefield, these changes to the colonial - British kinship would have drastic effects on the fate of both nations, and undeniably, a hand in the parting of mother and child.

Ok, I underlined the thesis and reworked a good amount of the body. Feel free to critique or offer any advice; it would be welcomed.

Has everyone decided on a common thesis, then?  We need to get this done so we can examine all of the outside information included in the essay.  Then we can examine the documents.  We haven't forgotten this assignment, right? smile
