Assignment #3: Colonial House

Visit the following site: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/colonialhouse/, or click on the individual links below.

Background: The primary goal of this web assignment is to examine how a reality-based television show can educate us about this period.  Colonial life in the early British American colonies was extremely harsh and exists, with almost no modern context, only in the pages of our history books.  Learning about the history of the colonial period, however, in textbooks only goes so far.  Here, we take it another step forward.

Assignment: Complete two of the following four assignments:

1)      Meet the Colonists - Read each colonist's reflections and profile.  Vividly describe five of the colonists in your own words.

2)      Behind the Scenes Describe how the program was created.  Use five stories to highlight your answer (then and now).

3)
Interactive History Choose five of the interactive options, describe, analyze and critique each and explain what you learned.

4)
Media Gallery Choose one video diary and one image from the photo gallery and describe what you learned from each.

Evaluation: Successful completion of the following assignments will be measured by 1) content analysis, 2) historical context, 3) historical detail and 4) writing mechanics.  Each assignment is worth 50 points.

Plimoth Plantation served as a major historical consultant to the COLONIAL HOUSE production in many of our areas of expertise. As a member of the museum's historical carpentry program, my particular responsibility was to design and oversee the creation of the buildings for the Colony. This work began, as it had done in actual colonizing efforts, with negotiations over scope and resources. Museum Programs Director Liz Lodge and I conferred with the show's producers on how many people and how many buildings could be accommodated within the program's resources, just as early colonists negotiated with their financial backers.

Once we had settled on the scale of the settlement, initially four dwellings and two sheds, I needed to place it on the site chosen by the production crew on the far eastern coast of Maine. I drew from Plimoth Plantation's research on the layout of many early settlements. One in particular seemed appropriate: the French settlement of St. Croix, established in 1604. Not only did the cross street layout create the compact village we wanted, but the colony had been located just up the Maine coast from our intended site. With the number and disposition of the buildings resolved, we began the work of construction.

Craig Tuminaro A curator and part-time graduate student from Virginia, Craig Tuminaro is indentured to the Company, living in the Voorhees' house. Although he arrived halfway through the project, he quickly transitioned into a 17th-century workhorse, laboring tirelessly on the Colony's building projects, including spar (ship mast) production and other profit-making ventures.

Chloe the dog Chloe is part of the Voorhees family. She is a seven-year-old mutt and came from Nebraska via the Northeast Animal shelter in Salem, Massachusetts. Chloe was feeling a mid-life crisis coming on and felt the need to broaden her horizons with an adventure. She also heard there was the possibility of other single dogs being involved in the project, and was interested in meeting someone. Most of her days were spent patrolling the property

Paul Hunt
Paul Hunt is a laborer from Manchester, England. On the Colony he was a servant to the Governor and his family. Paul worked loyally alongside the other servants in the house, endlessly chopping wood, fetching water, and taking care of the pigs.

David Wyers David Wyers, nine years old when he lived in the Colony, is the youngest child of the Governor's family.

Jeff Lin  Jeff Lin, a software engineer from Minnesota, arrived halfway through the project to become a servant indentured to the Company, living in the Voorhees' house. He is a hard worker and his labor, together with that of the other male servants and freemen of the Colony, provided the foundations of the building of the Colony. A fiddle player, Jeff often entertained the Colony.

Henry the dog  Henry is a terrier mutt. He is five years old, and came from an animal shelter in Houston, Texas. The opportunity of unlimited squirrel chasing convinced him to join Don Wood on the Colony. On the Colony, he spent his days sleeping in the sun and chasing rabbits. In the 21st century, Henry likes riding in the car, going on walks, and getting attention.

1- Jeff Wyers, was a merchant fro Bristol and the Governor of the Colony. Because of his influence and his expertise as a merchant and his status and traditional values he would be the perfect candidate to be a good governor.

Don Heinz, was the religious leader and was choose by the company. Because he is elder he is  know as the Wise Elder. He had also studied in Oxford University and hence he was also appointed to be the office of Assistant, offering advice to the Governor in matters of importance.

John Voorhes is an ex soldier having previously fought in the Continent, comes from a rural village of England called Worcestershire having later moved to Bristol. Having heard the fisherman and other people who had previously been in the New World and having learned that the Company was looking for settlers for the new colony they didnt waste time in packing their things in order to fulfill their dreams of a better life.

Craig Tuminaro, is another person who wants to run away from England s depressive economy and having heard about Virginia before he too wants to go and live in the New World. Having done a series of odd jobs he always had an interest in constructing even knowing that he has little experience in carpentry and he knows that is going to be plenty of jobs in construction in the New World.

Dominic Muir is a man of privilege back in England since his family is extremely respected and he also studied at the prestigious school of Eton College.
Having learned he will not inherit his family real estate he decides to invest in the Company and becomes a colonist in the hope he finds adventure and wealth.

Don Wood, is single carpenter and tradesman from County of Avon who served Sir Ferdinando Cortes (a powerful and major investor of the Colonial House Company) and because of this connection he was a granted place in the Colony.

2- This program was  created on a basis to experience the building process from the perspective of the early colonists, starting with an isolated piece of coastline and constructing a village using the existing resources.

1st story: David Wyers, nine years old when he lived in the Colony, is the youngest child of the Governor's family.

The Company has recruited Jeff, a Bristol merchant on the rise, to be the Governor of the Colony.
While Jeff oversees the family business, Tammy oversees the children, Bethany, Amy, and David, taking great pains to see they are properly educated (). -Then

"I thought I would really be bored in the Colony without modern toys and entertainment. But when I got there I found all kinds of neat things to do. My friends and I went exploring every day and had adventures ().- Now

2nd story: Jonathon Allen is a graduate student from South Carolina. He lived with the Heinz couple as their only indentured servant.

() I had not the vaguest idea of how much labor, strength, perseverance, determination, and focus was required to not only make your Colony successful and eventually thriving, but to simply survive as an individual and not be inundated by the many impasses, hardships, and setbacks that gripped early colonial settlers after venturing to the New World." Now

Jonathon is of sturdy yeoman stock. He proved to be a good student in school, so his father stretched family resources to send him off to Oxford to study-the first member of his family to do so. Unfortunately, his father died during his first term at university, leaving his family in greatly reduced circumstances, so he was forced to leave. Not long after leaving university he nearly died from a serious illness. So in a brief span of time, Jonathon saw his prospects for a bright future rapidly diminish. Fortunately, he regained his health and shortly after learned that a parish minister and his wife, Don and Carolyn Heinz, were getting ready to depart for New England and were in need of a servant. Though at one time it might have been beneath him, he agreed to indenture himself for seven years to the Heinz, in return for their paying for his passage to New England and for the prospect of owning land at the end of his term of service. () Then

3rd story:
Giacomo Voorhees is 11 years old. He and his family represent the bulk of early colonists: skilled, middle-class adventurers seeking opportunity in a new world. They are from Massachusetts.

"I think my biggest challenge was having to live on a very limited diet, although my mom is an excellent cook which helped me cope with it somewhat. Unlike most of my fellow colonists, I liked the clothes and I'm still trying to convince my mom to let me wear them to school. Work was hard, but oftentimes rewarding. I also enjoyed working with the animals, which was usually quite amusing. ()-Now

As a young married couple, John and Michelle left their rural village in Worcestershire with their son Giacomo, seeking a way out of the rural poverty that gripped many English families.-Then

4th story: Jeff Lin, software engineer from Minnesota, arrived halfway through the project to become a servant indentured to the Company, living in the Voorhees' house.

"In our modern lives, we are surrounded by stimuli that grab our attention and occupy our minds. On the Colony we were deprived of any modern entertainment, so in our free time we engaged with each other one human being to another. Human interaction builds strong relationships, which leads to respect for one another. With so many people in the village, there was no way that all the colonists would necessarily be best friends with one another, but at the least we would find ways to respect and admire each other. ()-Now

The merchant Jeffrey works for provides provisions for the colony and is also a shareholder in the Colonial House Company. Jeffrey has heard of the need for workers in New England and is willing to leave behind his parents and his sister, for the lure of the adventure and the promise of opportunity.

He signs an indenture to work for the Colonial House Company for the term of seven years and will answer to the Governor. (..)-Then

5th story: Danny Tisdale is a visual artist teaching at a high school in New York City. He is also the publisher of HARLEM WORLD magazine. On the Colony, he is a freeman; as the oldest freeman, he is head of the freemen's household.

()I better understand that democracy is not guaranteed, and that my participation is required to keep and enhance it; for me this is one of the greatest gifts of the project."-Now

Dan has been able to use his savings to furnish and prepare a household with the hopes of marrying in the New World. Until this happens, he will share his household with the other single men of the Colony-Don and Dominic. As their elder, he will be an authority in the household, helping to keep the younger single men in line. (..)

My first option was to take the quiz to see how long would I last in the colonyNeedless to say I wouldnt last at all because and according to the quiz: You are hopelessly trapped in the 21st century. Colonial life would not suit you. But look on the bright side: You smell much better than the colonists did.

Then I took the option that allowed me to dress like 1628 colonist.again I failed in most every option

I like these activities because it kind of forces you to think as if you lived at that time and put your ideas in some sort of perspective.
