Essay Question: Examine the events, issues and individuals responsible for the early settlements of the North American continent (Spanish, French and English) and provide a detailed analysis of political, economic and social characteristics exhibited by the first settlers that have common connections in modern Americans today.
Project Based LessonModern Colonizers: Students will role-play the decisions, policies and plans of the first settlers on the moon.  Students will make decisions concerning economic trade, political organization, environmental dangers, military and police authority, legal authority, ideological beliefs, rights of the individual, religious concerns, etc.
Readings/InternetMayflower Compact, 500 Nations, Bartholomew De Las Casas's journals, John Smith's journals
Links Lesson: 1) Cause and Effect chart of events in colonial American history such as King Phillip's War, Bacon's Rebellion, Roger William's exile, use of indentured servitude and African slaves, etc. 2) Compare and Contrast chart of the English settlements of Jamestown and Plymouth Plantation, 3) Venn Diagram of Spanish and English settlements
