Essay Question: Consider the struggles of the second three Presidents (Madison, Monroe and Adams) and determine in hindsight what lessons were learned concerning the use of military power, the election system, territorial expansion, the institution of slavery and international relations.  Summarize your findings by proposing policy guidelines for modern American presidents.
Project Based LessonAnalyzing Jefferson - Students will examine various methods for examining the life and accomplishments of Thomas Jefferson from building a model replica of Monticello to role playing diplomatic relations with France to writing (or acting) Jefferson's thoughts and policies on slavery to cataloguing his scientific and botany pursuits and more.  Students will develop multiple methods of classroom instruction to demonstrate the multiple accomplishments and endeavors of one of the most intellectual and experienced American presidents. 
Readings/Internet: Accounts of the Burning of Washington, Accounts from the War of 1812
Links Lesson: 1) Compare and Contrast Chart  between the Invasion of Canada during the War of 1812 and the Invasion of Mexico in the Mexican War of 1844-1848, 2) Concept Web of the issues and events of each individual presidency of Madison, Monroe and Adams, 3) Cause and Effect Chart of the War of 1812
Essential Questions: 1) Was Native American unity in defense against American invasion possible or practical? 2) What were the real objectives of the Monroe Doctrine?  Was it a politically wise strategy? 3) Could coalition political parties function effectively in the American republic? 4) Was the War of 1812 a purposeless war?  When is war justified? 5) Are the changes of industrialization positive, negative or mixed depending on its use?
