Assignment #16: Peace Studies

Assignment:  Imagine that you are the President of the Student Congress (or Student Advisory Council) of your high school.  Year after year your school has had to eliminate electives because of budget cuts.   Your headmaster has approached you this year, however, with a proposal for a new elective: Peace Studies.  This course is entirely yours to create.  The idea is to borrow from A) historical stories, B) multicultural groups and C) specific social justice strategies to include in the curriculum.  Using the links below, create the following components of this new elective: 1) a brief description in the Program of Studies, 2) an outline for a nine unit curriculum (2 weeks each), and 3) a description of two major projects to be completed by the students.

Evaluation: 1) Program of Studies description (20 points a brief paragraph explaining the course to students and guidance counselors), 2) a nine unit outline (60 points use an outline format that explains the topics to be covered and objectives to be achieved for each unit), and 3) two major projects (20 points a brief description of each project).

This course is designed to help students in the school. It's to help make people more diverse and understanding. We're aiming to end ignorance throughout this high school. This class is 18 weeks long and no tests will be given, in replacement we'll have projects and discussion groups. This is meant to expand our comfort zone. We aim to increase tolerance and decrease violence.

1-Introduction. Everyone learn about each other; where we can from and what be stand for.

2-our differences. We want to show that everyone my be similar but no one is the same. We want everyone t know that one cant tease another because of a difference because were all different.

3 a two week long project. Trace you family tree then compare and contrast to everyone in the class. Report on your findings.

4- letter to people all over the worl Write a letter to 10 other people in different counties. Next week write five letters to people all over the counrty. Compare your findings.

5-think of everything about people that annoy yo writ down why and then write the ways that yu can learn to tolerate them. Think of what they wouldn't like about you, write down how they can learn to tolerate you.

6- watch Gahandi. Discuss the movie. Debate whether or not these methods could work all the time or not.

7- discuss major problems with the school, debate ways to fix them by working together.

8- compare your old work to new work in a project. In full detail describe how your thoughts have changed and or why you still feel the same way.

9- reflect on what you learned, how will you pass this on.

Everything that we'll do will have a base on tolerance. Everything should reflect how the students feel, and what their beliefs are. What we will achieve is respact and all over tolerance which in turn should end a lot of violence in and out of school.

Peace Studies
The Peace Studies class will focus on three major things.  The first objective will be to learn all about the diffretn types of racism, sexism, and prejudice that are in the United States.  It will mainly focus on the challenges that we face in our own community.  The second objective will be to try and learn why people have prejudices and racisms.  They will try and find out what makes a racist tick.  The third objective will be to study the different peaceful methods of dealing with racism.

Unit Overview

1.  Students will conduct a project on diffrent hate groups and organizations around America.  They will make a poster board outlining their assigned organization's goals and history.
2.  Students will study Racism leaders such as Adolf Hitler and write reserach papers on them.  The papers will include parts of a biography, professional theories on why they acted the ay they did.  Papers will also include a personal  theory and opinion of the student on their leader.
3.  Students will watch the movie Remember the Titans and learn how the characters deal with racism on thier very own football team.  They will write a paper and express their opinion on the methods the coach used to bring the team together.
4.  Students will study about the feminist movement and discuss the results.  Whether or not the movement actually accomplished any og the goals it set out to achieve.  Did things really change for women or no?  They will try to answer this question.
5.  Students will look at the different types of racism in our community and discuss personal experiences with eachother and the class.  They will pass in a written paper on what hearing the personal experiences did for them.
6.  Students will research and try to find out why people are racist.  Is in all genes and hereditary? Or is it the product of the enviroment you are born into.  A combo of both?
7.  Studnets will conduct a research project on Ghandi and his peaceful protest methods.  They will also look at the success rate of his methods.  Did they make a difference without violence?
