Assignment #17: Ethical Scenarios

Source: http://www.tru.ca/ae/php/phil/mclaughl/courses/ethics/bioeth/dilemmas.htm

What is the morally right thing to do in the following cases?
Be sure to discuss your reasons and possible alternative solutions to the one that you propose. Is what you would 'actually' do different from what you 'should' do? If so, why?
1. The sheriff in a southern town is guarding the courthouse against a mob that is about to storm it by force, in order to capture a black prisoner and lynch him even before his trial. If the mob is frustrated, many people may be killed in the ensuing riot. Should the sheriff deliver the prisoner to the mob?

2. Should the wealthier members of society be forced to pay through taxation, for the poorer members? If so, how much?

3. A man has been sentenced to prison for armed robbery, and admits guilt for the deed. "But", he argues,"I'll never do anything of the kind again. I'm not insane or a danger to society. I would be happier out of jail than in. My wife depends on me for support and she and the children would be far happier if I were able to be the family breadwinner again. As to the influence on others, almost no one would ever know about it; you can keep the matter out of the newspapers and no one except you will ever know that the crime was committed. Therefore, you should release me" Assuming he is correct, what would you do?

4. A rich man and a poor man commit the same type of crime. The rich man is fined $10,000 while the poor man is sent to jail for one year. Is this fair?

5. You are on a country road and see two neighboring farm houses on fire. One is yours and the other belongs to a new couple who just moved in. Your wife and child are at home as are your neighbors. You can only save one house. Which one do you save?

6. You run an orphanage and have had a hard time making ends meet. A car dealership offers you a new van worth $15,000 for free if you will falsely report to the government that the dealership donated a van worth $30,000. You really need the van and it will give you an opportunity to make the children happy. Do you agree to take the van?

7. You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her?

8. You are waiting with a few other people to board a bus. The bus pulls up and before you can board the driver gets out and goes into the convenience store to get a coffee. You are the last to get on the bus. Do you pay your fare?

9. You discover Bill Gate's wallet lying on the street. It contains $1000.00 Do you send it back to him?

10. It is 3 a.m. and you are late getting home. As you approach the intersection you notice that no one is around. Do you drive through the red light?

11. In Dostoyevsky's novel Crime and Punishment the main character plots and carries out the murder of an old woman who has a considerable amount of money in her apartment. After killing her, he steals the money. He argues that 1) she is a malicious old woman, petty, cantankerous and scheming, useless to herself and to society (which happens to be true), and her life causes no happiness to herself or to others; and 2) her money if found after her death would only fall into the hands of bad people anyway, whereas he would use it for his education. Is this action justified?

12. As a nurse, you are the last person to see Mr. Doe before he dies in hospital. You believe that he has become mentally incompetent in the last few hours and in that time he has rewritten his will. In the new will he viciously attacks each member of his adopted. He then cuts every family member out of the will leaving his fortune to a Psychic Chatline. Mr. Jones asks you to make sure that the new will gets to his lawyer. Knowing that the document will most likely be thrown out of court but not before the damage to Mr. Doe's family is done, do you carry out Mr. Doe's last request?

13. Would it be justifiable to whip pigs to death if more succulent pork resulted from this process, giving the consumers of pork more pleasure?

14. Should we punish the theft of $1000 more than the theft of $100?

15. Should we punish attempted murder less than murder?

16. You are on a boat and nearby are two large rocks filled with persons waiting to be rescued; there are five people on one rock and four on the other. Assume that you cannot rescue both groups and that you are the only one able to rescue either group. Which group do you rescue?

17. You can only rescue one of each of the following, which do you save?
a) A child or an adult
b) A stranger or your dog
c) Hitler or lassie
d) Your spouse or a Nobel Laureate
e) A dog or a weasel
f) Your entire family or the entire canine species
g) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother
h) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother who just gave you one of his kidneys

18. Are the following acceptable grounds for a person to end the life of a non-human animal? a) Its noise bothers you at night.
b) The wolf is killing your sheep.
c) Its meat makes a tasty dish.
d) You enjoy seeing it squirm.
e) The gophers are destroying your vegetable garden.
f) You just don't like snakes
g) The condor (an endangered species) keeps killing your prized carrier pigeons.
h)I enjoy hunting.

19. Are any of the following situations objectionable?
a) Raising and killing rabbits for food.
b) Raising and killing rabbits for fur.
c) Clubbing baby seals over the head for fur.
d) Raising chickens under crowded conditions on wire netting.
e) Slitting open the bodies of cattle in slaughterhouses before they are unconscious.
f) Using spontaneously aborted fetal tissue for treating Parkinson's disease victims.
g) Using intentionally aborted fetal tissue for purposes of art.
h) A highly rated television show which depicts the actual torture of a convicted criminal.
i) A highly rated television show which depicts the actual torture of a poor homeless orphan.
j) Torturing a person (who will die from the injuries) as the only means to find out where they have hidden a nuclear bomb.

20. Pick any one of the above 19 questions and try to consider why someone might answer it differently than you. Can you offer reasons for their views? Are any of these reasons persuasive?

What is the morally right thing to do in the following cases?  Be sure to discuss your reasons and possible alternative solutions to the one that you propose. Is what you would 'actually' do different from what you 'should' do? If so, why?

1. The sheriff in a southern town is guarding the courthouse against a mob that is about to storm it by force, in order to capture a black prisoner and lynch him even before his trial. If the mob is frustrated, many people may be killed in the ensuing riot. Should the sheriff deliver the prisoner to the mob?

No, he should just call for back up because the prisoner might be lynched anyway its better to let him go tough the trail then to hand him over

2. Should the wealthier members of society be forced to pay through taxation, for the poorer members? If so, how much?

Yes, they have a lot of money and need to share it, like 2% of there wealth

Well I would sent him to jail for like 3 to 6 months then sent him home, if he know what he was doing then he didnt have to do it, he could of just gotten a job

4. A rich man and a poor man commit the same type of crime. The rich man is fined $10,000 while the poor man is sent to jail for one year. Is this fair?

No, the rich man should go to jail too not everyone can pay that fine and the rich deserve to go to jail for a while

5. You are on a country road and see two neighboring farm houses on fire. One is yours and the other belongs to a new couple who just moved in. Your wife and child are at home as are your neighbors. You can only save one house. Which one do you save?

Can I just save both if I have my cell phone then I can call 911 and try to save my family then the neighbors because family is first

6. You run an orphanage and have had a hard time making ends meet. A car dealership offers you a new van worth $15,000 for free if you will falsely report to the government that the dealership donated a van worth $30,000. You really need the van and it will give you an opportunity to make the children happy. Do you agree to take the van?

Since its for the orphanage Ill do that but only once it wouldnt be fair for the kids not to have a good van but then I would lie to government and be found out so I better just not take the fan and try to get them to change their mind

7. You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her?

Nah she can keep the stocking because its just a stocking but if it was any thing else I would just tell on her

8. You are waiting with a few other people to board a bus. The bus pulls up and before you can board the driver gets out and goes into the convenience store to get a coffee. You are the last to get on the bus. Do you pay your fare?

Yes I would pay my fare I would be right if I didnt it would be wrong

9. You discover Bill Gate's wallet lying on the street. It contains $1000.00 Do you send it back to him?

Yeah Ill give gates his wallet back

10. It is 3 a.m. and you are late getting home. As you approach the intersection you notice that no one is around. Do you drive through the red light?

No, because there are cameras at the lights so they would find me anyway

No, because she should give out her money the way she wants and no one should stop her Im living just for her money, maybe she wanted to give it to charity

-yes I would do what he asked but fix it so the family gets the money

13. Would it be justifiable to whip pigs to death if more succulent pork resulted from this process, giving the consumers of pork more pleasure?

No, whipping pigs to death is animal cruelty

14. Should we punish the theft of $1000 more than the theft of $100?

Yeah because thats a lot of money

15. Should we punish attempted murder less than murder?

No there the same thing either way someone dies

16. You are on a boat and nearby are two large rocks filled with persons waiting to be rescued; there are five people on one

-No, because that person has his right to a trial. They should really call for help (some backup) and break up the mob like the break up riots, with smoke, and whatever else they normally use.

2. Should the wealthier members of society be forced to pay through taxation, for the poorer members? If so, how much?

-I think the really poor members of society shouldn't be forced to pay a lot in taxes, if any at all. The wealthier members should have to give a little bit more just to help the economy of the society a little bit.

No, I would sentence him to what he deserves, either way he did what he did now he has to pay the crime. He should've thought of his family while he was robbing that bank.

4. A rich man and a poor man commit the same type of crime. The rich man is fined $10,000 while the poor man is sent to jail for one year. Is this fair?

-Yes, because the poor man probably can't afford the $10,000, but he should be able to be released on bail.

5. You are on a country road and see two neighboring farm houses on fire. One is yours and the other belongs to a new couple who just moved in. Your wife and child are at home as are your neighbors. You can only save one house. Which one do you save?

I save the one with my wife and child, because they mean a lot more to me then the new couple that just moved in.

6. You run an orphanage and have had a hard time making ends meet. A car dealership offers you a new van worth $15,000 for free if you will falsely report to the government that the dealership donated a van worth $30,000. You really need the van and it will give you an opportunity to make the children happy. Do you agree to take the van?

Yes.

7. You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her?

No, I leave her alone, it's the security's job to catch her not mine.

8. You are waiting with a few other people to board a bus. The bus pulls up and before you can board the driver gets out and goes into the convenience store to get a coffee. You are the last to get on the bus. Do you pay your fare?

No, if the bus driver goes to the convenience store clearly he doesn't care much about me paying for the fee.

9. You discover Bill Gate's wallet lying on the street. It contains $1000.00 Do you send it back to him?

Yes, hopefully he would give me even more money for returning it.

10. It is 3 a.m. and you are late getting home. As you approach the intersection you notice that no one is around. Do you drive through the red light?

Yea, I do it all the time lol.

No, you can't kill someone for being a threat, because right now thats all she is.

Yes, that is his choice, not mine to make, and I'm not in the will so what do I care.

13. Would it be justifiable to whip pigs to death if more succulent pork resulted from this process, giving the consumers of pork more pleasure?

No, that is animal cruelty.

14. Should we punish the theft of $1000 more than the theft of $100?

No, its the notion of theft that is the crime, not the amount you take.

15. Should we punish attempted murder less than murder?

In some cases because sometimes the attempted murder might have changed their mind and couldn't go through with it so in that case they should get less.

16. You are on a boat and nearby are two large rocks filled with persons waiting to be rescued; there are five people on one rock and four on the other. Assume that you cannot rescue both groups and that you are the only one able to rescue either group. Which group do you rescue?

The one with 5 people because I would be saving 1 more person.

17. You can only rescue one of each of the following, which do you save?
a) A child or an adult

a child

b) A stranger or your dog

I love my dog but a person's life is more important

c) Hitler or lassie

I guess lassie even though I dont like either.

d) Your spouse or a Nobel Laureate

My spouse

e) A dog or a weasel

A dog

f) Your entire family or the entire canine species

My entire family

g) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother

My brother

h) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother who just gave you one of his kidneys

My brother

18. Are the following acceptable grounds for a person to end the life of a non-human animal?
a) Its noise bothers you at night. no
b) The wolf is killing your sheep. yes
c) Its meat makes a tasty dish. if your really hungry
d) You enjoy seeing it squirm. no
e) The gophers are destroying your vegetable garden. no
f) You just don't like snakes no
g) The condor (an endangered species) keeps killing your prized carrier pigeons. no
h)I enjoy hunting. no

19. Are any of the following situations objectionable?
a) Raising and killing rabbits for food. yes
b) Raising and killing rabbits for fur. yes
c) Clubbing baby seals over the head for fur. yes
d) Raising chickens under crowded conditions on wire netting. yes
e) Slitting open the bodies of cattle in slaughterhouses before they are unconscious. yes
f) Using spontaneously aborted fetal tissue for treating Parkinson's disease victims. no
g) Using intentionally aborted fetal tissue for purposes of art. yes
h) A highly rated television show which depicts the actual torture of a convicted criminal. yes
i) A highly rated television show which depicts the actual torture of a poor homeless orphan. yes
j) Torturing a person (who will die from the injuries) as the only means to find out where they have hidden a nuclear bomb. no

20. Pick any one of the above 19 questions and try to consider why someone might answer it differently than you. Can you offer reasons for their views? Are any of these reasons persuasive?

1. The sheriff should NOT give the prisoner to the mob. Every U.S. citizen is guaranteed by the Constitution a fair and speedy trial by a jury of their peers. If the mob wants to deny him that right by committing murder, then they are the criminals and they should be stopped by any means necessary. Besides, if the sheriff just hands over the prisoner, then what will stop from a mob forming again to lynch some other prisoner? If people know that by organizing into a violent mob will allow them to commit murder without any consequences, they will always do that when they're feeling self-righteous. If they're willing to kill bystanders just to lynch a possibly innocent man, then what's wrong with using lethal force to stop them from doing so?

2. The wealthier members of society should pay for the poorer members of society. More often than not, celebrities earn enough money to buy themselves obscenely expensive homes, cars, jewelry, and other things and their children will never have to work a day of their lives. I'm all for letting people spend their hard-earned money but when that money is going into $10 million mansions while our public services struggle for adequate funding and people starve in the streets, I believe the government should step in and force some of that money to be contributed to charity. Most people make $1 million over their entire career. Many wealthy people can easily make that in a year, so why should they be so privileged?

3. It doesn't really matter whether or not anyone will know about it. He robbed that store for one of two reasons: for kicks or because he needed the money. If he needs the money, he could very well try to rob another store and succeed, depriving someone else of money that they need. If it was for kicks, then he is a danger to society because he is willing to steal from complete strangers just to have some fun. It's sad that his family will struggle without him but he is too big a risk to just let go. The only other option is to let him go under surveillance, which still doesn't guarantee that he won't do it again in the future regardless of whether or not he's still being watched.

4. The punishment is in no way fair; for a wealthy person, $10,000 is a dent in their finances at best. A conviction and prison sentence for a poorer man could mean that he loses the opportunity to have a well-paying job, which only damns him even further. Why should the rich man lose only some small part of his finances while the poor man spends a year of his life rotting in jail, unable to be with his friends and family? For the punishments to be even remotely fair, one of two things should happen: either the rich man pays a fine equivalent to the cost of keeping the poor man in prison (which is between $22,000 and $76,000) or both of them should go to jail for the same amount of time.

5. I would save my family. If one group needs to die in order for the other to live, I feel obligated to feel my family. Although it's tragic that the young couple have to die, I'm not going to let a woman and child--certainly not my own--die.

6. Unless I could negotiate the "price" of the donation, I would not report that the van donated was worth $30,000 to the government. There are other means of getting things that I need and I hate watching businesses and the people who run them get away with using loopholes to cheat the government. Somewhere along the line, filing the false report will bite me or the children in the ass.

7. I have no reason not to report the woman for stealing. Stockings are not a necessity for living, so chances are she's just stealing them because she wants them. She'll probably just end up stealing other things if I let her get away with it.

8. Bus fare is, what, $1.50 maybe? $2.00? I'm not such a cheapskate that I'm not willing to pay my bus fare.

9. I would send the wallet back, but not the money. I know it's not right stealing from someone, but Bill Gates has billions of dollars. $1,000 is nothing to him. My family, on the other hand, has a mortgage on a house to pay, so we need the money a hell of a lot more than he does.

10. I've had friends and family get into car accidents by speeding through red lights when they don't see anyone around. Besides, being delayed a few seconds isn't going to make me feel any less exhausted when I wake up in the morning.

11. I believe it's justified. Although murder is against the law, no one gains anything by letting her live. The old woman is quite literally evil, however childish that may sound. If the loss of the life of someone who only lives to hurt others is the price to pay for helping everyone around her, I think it is justified.

12. If Mr. Doe has become mentally incompetent and the court would throw it out because of this fact, giving the will to his lawyer would only hurt everyone in his family which, if he were in his right mind, he would probably not wish to do.

13. Whipping pigs to death just to make them taste a little better isn't reason enough to torture animals. If people didn't like pork to begin with, they probably won't like the "new" pork. Everyone else can shut up and eat. Anyone who is THAT picky about what they eat deserves to starve.

14. Punishments should be different for the two crimes. $100 is something that high school students can make in a week doing part-time work. Stealing something worth $1000 is stealing what is perhaps a little less than a month's salary to many people. Crimes for both should be severe, but not equal. Criminals often escalate their crimes, so someone who has started stealing will steal $100, not $1000. If need be, make more severe punishments for repeat offenses.

That's it for now; I'll finish the rest later.

-No, his job mandates that he is to protect the prisoner.

2. Should the wealthier members of society be forced to pay through taxation, for the poorer members? If so, how much?

-If they are extremely wealthy and do not give back to the community, then they should be taxed more than others.

-Send him to jail, its the law

4. A rich man and a poor man commit the same type of crime. The rich man is fined $10,000 while the poor man is sent to jail for one year. Is this fair?

-Yes, and no.  Every judge often has a different sentencing for crimes that are the same.  Some judges are harsh, some are not.

5. You are on a country road and see two neighboring farm houses on fire. One is yours and the other belongs to a new couple who just moved in. Your wife and child are at home as are your neighbors. You can only save one house. Which one do you save?

-YOURS!  Its your moral obligation to your family to protect them and provide for them.

6. You run an orphanage and have had a hard time making ends meet. A car dealership offers you a new van worth $15,000 for free if you will falsely report to the government that the dealership donated a van worth $30,000. You really need the van and it will give you an opportunity to make the children happy. Do you agree to take the van?

-Yes, our country can miss out on a couple of tax dollars.

7. You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her?

-Maybe, but more than likely no.

8. You are waiting with a few other people to board a bus. The bus pulls up and before you can board the driver gets out and goes into the convenience store to get a coffee. You are the last to get on the bus. Do you pay your fare?

 -No, free ride!

9. You discover Bill Gate's wallet lying on the street. It contains $1000.00 Do you send it back to him?

-NO!  You spend the money on his MICROSOFT products: XBOX 360, controllers, games, and a computer.

10. It is 3 a.m. and you are late getting home. As you approach the intersection you notice that no one is around. Do you drive through the red light?

-NO, a cop can pull you over and the price of a ticket is not worth it.

-NO!  the killing of anyone is morally wrong, end of discussion.

-Yes, otherwise you can lose your job of anyone finds out.

13. Would it be justifiable to whip pigs to death if more succulent pork resulted from this process, giving the consumers of pork more pleasure?

-NO!  The mistreatment of animals and humans are wrong, no matter the outcome (plus PETA would throw a hissy fit over this news).

14. Should we punish the theft of $1000 more than the theft of $100?

-No, because if there was an opportunity to steal more money it would have been taken; so why punish people for less if they are just as evil as the person who stole more.

15. Should we punish attempted murder less than murder?

-No, it is still the act minus the end result of death.

16. You are on a boat and nearby are two large rocks filled with persons waiting to be rescued; there are five people on one rock and four on the other. Assume that you cannot rescue both groups and that you are the only one able to rescue either group. Which group do you rescue?

 -The one with more people.

And now I'll finish answering the other questions that I missed.

15. No. Attempted murder is trying to kill someone and failing. It's the intent and action without the results. Just because someone manages to escape from their attacker or another person stops the attacker doesn't make the person any less dangerous.

16. I would rescue the group of four people. I don't know any of these people, so I can either choose to only rescue one person and kill four or rescue four and kill one. Choosing the smaller group makes no sense to me.

17. You can only rescue one of each of the following, which do you save?
a) A child
b) My dog
c) Hitler
d) My spouse
e) A dog
f) The entire canine species
g) A bottle with the cure for cancer
h) A bottle with the cure for cancer

18. Are the following acceptable grounds for a person to end the life of a non-human animal?
a) No.
b) Yes.
c) Yes.
d) No.
e) Depends on whether it's necessary for survival (ie you only eat the vegetables from your garden).
f) No.
g) No.
h) No.

19. Are any of the following situations objectionable?
a) No.
b) No. (Raising rabbits period provides both, since we don't eat the fur.)
c) Yes.
d) No.
e) Yes.
f) No.
g) Yes.
h) Yes.
i) Yes.
j) No.

20. I can see why someone would choose to save Lassie over Hitler. Hitler was a horrible person who ordered the genocide of millions of people because of his own personal grudges. Lassie was a dog on television that saved little boys in wells.

Still, I interpreted the question as saving one of the two before they actually died in our history. Although I believe that the things Hitler did should never be repeated again, I can't say for certain whether or not the effects Hitler's actions have had on modern society are for the better. If Hitler had died as a kid, would the world be a better or worse place right now? I can't say that I believe we would be better if he had never lived out his life the way he did. Compared to Hitler's importance to our history and society, Lassie is just an insignificant animal.

I do not the sheriff should deliver the prisoner. I think that this action will cause a lot of problems. The sheriff should just stay and guard the courthouse.

2. Should the wealthier members of society be forced to pay through taxation, for the poorer members? If so, how much?
I think that the wealthier members should pay taxations for poorer members just because they are able to and because the poorer members need it more then they do. I think they should pay about $50 out of each check they get.

I would still argue assuming he is guilty of the crime. Otherwise I would just release him  with a warning that if it happens again there will be consequences.

4. A rich man and a poor man commit the same type of crime. The rich man is fined $10,000 while the poor man is sent to jail for one year. Is this fair?
This is definitely not fair. both men did the same crime and deserve the same punishment. There could be the case that the poorer man did not have the money for the fine so was sent to jail but I still disagree. both men should have been givin the jail time.

5. You are on a country road and see two neighboring farm houses on fire. One is yours and the other belongs to a new couple who just moved in. Your wife and child are at home as are your neighbors. You can only save one house. Which one do you save?
I would save my wife and child. No offense to the new couple but my family comes first.

6. You run an orphanage and have had a hard time making ends meet. A car dealership offers you a new van worth $15,000 for free if you will falsely report to the government that the dealership donated a van worth $30,000. You really need the van and it will give you an opportunity to make the children happy. Do you agree to take the van?
I would agree to take the van and falsely report to the government just because I need the van and really want to make the children happy even though I know deep down its not the right thing to do.

7. You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her?
Honestly, I would not report her because what shes doing is her business its none of mine. she probably had the money for it but didnt want to pay either way it wouldnt matter because I think its none of my business.

8. You are waiting with a few other people to board a bus. The bus pulls up and before you can board the driver gets out and goes into the convenience store to get a coffee. You are the last to get on the bus. Do you pay your fare?
Yes I would still pay my fare even though I am mad that I was last. I want to ride the bus I have to pay.

9. You discover Bill Gate's wallet lying on the street. It contains $1000.00 Do you send it back to him?
The way I am, I would keep it. {LOL!} thats just me. Bill Gates has enough money Im sure he wont miss it.

10. It is 3 a.m. and you are late getting home. As you approach the intersection you notice that no one is around. Do you drive through the red light?
Even though no one is around I would still obey the law, I never know who may be watching.

No matter how cruel or evil a person is no one deserves the ultimate punishment. No matter what good may be coming out of the money and or crime.

I would not carry out his request. That is just too evil to do that 2 your family, people that cared about you and then on top of that give all your money to a phychic chatline? No, hes dead anyway.

13. Would it be justifiable to whip pigs to death if more succulent pork resulted from this process, giving the consumers of pork more pleasure?
No it would not be because we are already killing the poor thing for our need we dont need to also beat it to its death.

14. Should we punish the theft of $1000 more than the theft of $100?
I think I would because $1000 is obviously a larger amount then $100 even though stealing is stealing.

15. Should we punish attempted murder less than murder?
Yes I think we should because attempted murder was someone who tied but didnt succeed and then a murder means their victim is dead so yeah I would punish the victims differently.

16. You are on a boat and nearby are two large rocks filled with persons waiting to be rescued; there are five people on one rock and four on the other. Assume that you cannot rescue both groups and that you are the only one able to rescue either group. Which group do you rescue?
I think I wouldnt rescue neither one because it would not be fair. so I would let all of them suffer.

17. You can only rescue one of each of the following, which do you save?

a) A child or an adult
a child
b) A stranger or your dog
a stranger
c) Hitler or lassie LASSIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No. Call in zee army to help out transporting the prisoner.

2. Should the wealthier members of society be forced to pay through taxation, for the poorer members? If so, how much?

Yes, but not a lot. Atleast maybe the state's tax + 5% atleast to keep it fair.

House Arrest for sure.

4. A rich man and a poor man commit the same type of crime. The rich man is fined $10,000 while the poor man is sent to jail for one year. Is this fair?

The rich man should be fined more. The poor man can stay in jail with shelter and food.

5. You are on a country road and see two neighboring farm houses on fire. One is yours and the other belongs to a new couple who just moved in. Your wife and child are at home as are your neighbors. You can only save one house. Which one do you save?

Neighbors can get out themselves. I'd get my family and if theres time i'll go check my neighbors.

6. You run an orphanage and have had a hard time making ends meet. A car dealership offers you a new van worth $15,000 for free if you will falsely report to the government that the dealership donated a van worth $30,000. You really need the van and it will give you an opportunity to make the children happy. Do you agree to take the van?

I'd bargain something out. Maybe a bigger van with more worth, and i'll write it down for more too...

7. You are shopping and notice a woman stuffing a pair of stockings into her purse. Do you report her?

I shrug and just walk away.

8. You are waiting with a few other people to board a bus. The bus pulls up and before you can board the driver gets out and goes into the convenience store to get a coffee. You are the last to get on the bus. Do you pay your fare?

Nah. Just board and smile. Why not? The driver shouldn't be leaving the bus regardless.

9. You discover Bill Gate's wallet lying on the street. It contains $1000.00 Do you send it back to him?

I'd send back whatever was important in the wallet besides the cash..... Like he really needs it anyway?

10. It is 3 a.m. and you are late getting home. As you approach the intersection you notice that no one is around. Do you drive through the red light?

Nah. If it was a stop sign I would. Lights are different.

By law, it's wrong. But really.. I would just do it.

Nope. He went nuts, I dont believe it, no way.

13. Would it be justifiable to whip pigs to death if more succulent pork resulted from this process, giving the consumers of pork more pleasure?

If it makes money, I'm sure it's being done regardless of who says what.

14. Should we punish the theft of $1000 more than the theft of $100?

Yes.

15. Should we punish attempted murder less than murder?

Depends really.

16. You are on a boat and nearby are two large rocks filled with persons waiting to be rescued; there are five people on one rock and four on the other. Assume that you cannot rescue both groups and that you are the only one able to rescue either group. Which group do you rescue?

Both.

b) A stranger or your dog - Stranger
c) Hitler or lassie - Hitler
d) Your spouse or a Nobel Laureate - Spouse

g) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother - Brother

20. Pick any one of the above 19 questions and try to consider why someone might answer it differently than you. Can you offer reasons for their views? Are any of these reasons persuasive?

Number 15. Everyone has their own view on murder, especially from experience if someone in the family or even if someone was convicted of a murder but had the charges dropped. They are somewhat persuasive and whatnot, but it's really on anyones opinion.

-no call sum higher authority to help assess the situation.

2. Should the wealthier members of society be forced to pay through taxation, for the poorer members? If so, how much?

-no your wealthy due to your own hard work, why should you have to help the less wealthy people cuz theyre work ethic isnt as hard as yours.

1.  No, he should not give them the prisoner.  It is the Sheriff's job to uphold the prisoner's right to a fair trial.
2. The wealthier members should have to put in the same percentage of income as other member's of society.  If they choose to donate more, that is their choice but, it is not right to force them too.
3.  I would still put him into jail.  He is no different then anyone else.  If someone breaks a law, they deserve to go to jail.  This man is no different.
4.  No, this isn't fair at all.  The two people should be given the same punishment if they break the same law.
5.  I would save my wife and kids.  I would feel really bad for my neighbors, but I wouldnt be able to live with myself if I let my family die.
6.  Yes, I would take the van.  It would help the kids out.  That is the most important thing.
7.  If I saw her just stealing something cheap I wouldnt report her.  She might be poor and really need them.  If she was taking something really expensive like a diamond I would definately report her.

9.  I would send him his wallet back, but with no money.  He has so much and you might need it more.

11.  No, his action isn't justified.  No one has the right to take someone's life out of greed.
12.  No, I would not give the lawyer the new will.  I would not want to cause more harm to the family who already lost a family member.
13.  No, it would not be.  It is not ethical to torture any animal or person.
14.  Yes, that is a more serious crime.  You have taken a lot more money and therefore caused more damage.
15.  No, you should not get less of a punishment because you were too dumb to actually get what you wanted done.
16.  I would rescure the group with more people.  You just save more lives that way.

1. I wouldn't give the prisoner to the mob. Its against the law and morally wrong.

2. I think that the wealthier members shouldn't have to pay for poorer parts of society. Most wealthy families had to work really hard to get their money, how would it be fair to give it away to potentially someone who doesn't even try to work hard for money at all.

3. I wouldn't release him. I'm sure anybody would happy not to go to jail after attempting armed robbery. There's still a chance of him committing the crime again. If we let one person go for armed robery because he claims he'd never do it again and it would make his family happy there would be no one in jail!

4.No, its not fair at all. Wealth should not let some one get out of a crime.
