#12 - War Discussion

I wanted to begin a discussion here... (since this IS a discussion forum) on a couple of questions relating to war in general and this war (the Civil War) in particular...

The goal is to reply with your thoughts to the questions AND to ask questions of others or make comments of your own... even give ME work to do.  I'll reply here as well.  Let's see how many (serious) posts we can make on this conversation.

So... the questions:

1) If you take out the issue of slavery in the Civil War AND you lived in the South, would you fight against the Union to defend your state and your home?  Or would you turn against your neighbors?  Or run to the north with your family?

2) What do you think changes in a person when they go to war and accept the fact that they might have to kill others?  Do you think its only self defense?  Do you think that all people are capable of killing?  Do you think some people would not be able to do it, no matter what the orders were?

3) If your were an Iraqi or Afghan, what do you think the differences between the Civil War in the 1860's and the fighting in the War on Terror (Iraq, Afghanistan) are today?  Obviously, the technology and the issues (state's rights/slavery) are different, but from their point of view, is a civil war today the same as a civil war then?

4) When is war right?  When is war wrong?  Can you ever see yourself (yes, women in the class too) fighting in a war?  Can you see yourself protesting a war?

A:
1-I would get my family and go up north, because I think slavery is wrong. I wouldnt turn against them but in dont think thats right.

2-I think everyone is capable of killing in this case of someone being at war I think thats kill or be killed and no one like to die ha.

3-Obv. The technology as change to more efficient but I think the main think that changed was war technique and you dont have to stand in from off the bullet any more.

4-War is right when they fighting for a good reason, and its wrong when they kill innocent people. And yea I can see my self in war, I dont think I would protest.

I would fight against the union to defend my state and my home because at that time you had like no choice you can get killed by native Americans or captured while running away or even found by the opposite side. So the best way I think would be to fight against the union.

2) What do you think changes in a person when they go to war and accept the fact that they might have to kill others? Do you think its only self defense? Do you think that all people are capable of killing? Do you think some people would not be able to do it, no matter what the orders were?
When a person goes to war I think and they accept the fact that they will have to kill a person I think they change a lot I no I would a normal person shouldnt accept killing people but some times people have to die to make things better and that is a shame. I think all people are capable of killing but people kill for all types of reasons.

It is kind of the same because people think different today for example the crime rate is getting worse so that shows that the people are starting to change and I cant answer this question fully because im not in there shoes so I cant say what is happing in Iraq.

4) When is war right? When is war wrong? Can you ever see yourself (yes, women in the class too) fighting in a war? Can you see yourself protesting a war?
War is never right. War is always wrong I can see myself fighting in war but I never would unless I got drafted. I cant see myself protesting war cause I want nothing to do with it.

   1)   I would run to the North to get my freedom. 2)   If someone goes to war they have to defend themselves because someone else could kill them. Not everybody has the courage to kill someone. 3)   The Civil War had reasons, end with slavery and states rights to vote on laws. The war in Iraq has no reason at all. War is right when theres a reason why people should fight not just because people want to fight. I wouldnt fight in a war because I dont want to die and I just dont think people should fight. I would protest a war if I didnt think it was right, but I wouldnt fight.

1) If you take out the issue of slavery in the Civil War AND you lived in the South, would you fight against the Union to defend your state and your home?  Or would you turn against your neighbors?  Or run to the north with your family? i would fight if everyone is doing it i am going to jump in and fight for my right. it to stay alive and say go bye too my family maybe it would be my last time seeing them.

2) What do you think changes in a person when they go to war and accept the fact that they might have to kill others?  Do you think its only self defense?  Do you think that all people are capable of killing?  Do you think some people would not be able to do it, no matter what the orders were? Who try to shot me i am going to find them and shot them back i would defense myself  and my people.

Well i think now we have upgrade guns and others things. Back then they had cannon that was the powerful thing back then now it all about the bomo that going on.

4) When is war right?  When is war wrong?  Can you ever see yourself (yes, women in the class too) fighting in a war?  Can you see yourself protesting a war?  War can be right or wrong cause we have to fight what right for us. For american  but what wrong if u stay in war for 5 years then that wrong cause u still want to see your family and friends people are diying each day i think they should stop the war and bomb the people that we are fighting with! They may be so people that are nice or bad.

REAL TALK STOP THE WAR SOME MANY HAVE DIE KIDS WANT TO SEE THERE FATHERS AND MOTHERS.

----i think their oppinon changes cause it s almost like self defense your doing it for your country  you have to be proud of it.although i know some people might not be able to do it
3) If your were an Iraqi or Afghan, what do you think the differences between the Civil War in the 1860's and the fighting in the War on Terror (Iraq, Afghanistan) are today?  Obviously, the technology and the issues (state's rights/slavery) are different, but from their point of view, is a civil war today the same as a civil war then?
----yes because they still all want power and land to own.people to control

4) When is war right?  When is war wrong?  Can you ever see yourself (yes, women in the class too) fighting in a war?  Can you see yourself protesting a war?
----war is right when the nemies are doing something wrong.war  is wrong when you do it just to fight .No cause i would be to nervous, but maybe if it was necessary for my country. No i cannot see myself protesting a war

Well because I love my family and I am always with them I think id have to run to the north for my freedom and to just be with them cause when Im not with my family I feel weird I need to be with my family at all times.

But then again I think I would fight for my state and home because if I do run to the north I wont have a place to stay when I first get there.

  1. I would probably run to the North with my family because I would not want to get caught up in something that I do not believe in. Also I would not want to fight against the people that live in my state because then they might turn on me and my family.
  2. I think what changes a person when they have to go to war is that they would get more depressed because they are surrounded by killing and other horrible things going on. Also I think that they would feel guilty afterward even though they wanted to protect their sides. It might sometimes be self -defense if there is a situation when they are alone and someone from the opposite side sneaks up behind them. If you are pressured and pushed I think that people would let their guard down and would kill someone to protect themselves and the people they care about. If someone is very religious and believes very strongly not to kill someone no matter what the situation was yes I think that does happen.
  3. Some of the differences that I think that there are is that the weapons are better and more powerful today. Also I think that it would be more strict back then , then it is now. Now I think that people are more cautious of what they do in a war because it can affect the people around them.
I think that war is wrong when you are just killing people who had nothing to do with the problem. Also I think that war is right when you are fighting for something that really happened and is true. I cannot see myself fighting in a war I wouldnt be able to handle being away from my family.

1) I would stay and fight that way my family doesnt have to deal with anything.

2)I think it depends on the person but if someone was trying to kill you then im sure they would be able to kill someone.

3)I think its alot different because now we have different weapons that can do alot more damage.

4) War is right when our lives are threatend. War is wrong when theres no good reason for fighting. I can deffinetly see myself fighting in a war as long as its for a good reason. the only way id protest a war is if we were just attacking for no reason.

WAR DISCUSSION

1. I THINK THAT I WOULD FIGHT AGAINST THE UNION TO DEFEND MY STATE AND HOME. I WOULD FIGHT BECAUSE THERES STILL A CHANCE THAT YOU CAN GET KILLED BY NATIVE AMERICANS AND THERES STILL A CHANCE THAT YOU WILL GET CAUGHT.

2. WHAT CHANGES IN A PERSON WHEN THEY GO TO WAR AND HAVE TO ACCAEPT THE FACT THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE TO KILL SOMEONE IS CAUTION BECAUSE THE PROBABLY GONNA THINK THAT IF IM GONNA KILL ONE OF THEIR MEN THEN THEY MIGHT KILL ME. I DO THINK THAT EVERYONE IS CAPABLE OF KILLING BUT NOT EVERYONE WILL. NO, I DONT THINK ITS ONLY SELF DEFENSE BECAUSE THEY BECAUSE MOST OF THE TIME IT WOULD ONLY BE SELF DEFENSE IF SOMEONE TRIES TO SNEAK UP ON THEM THEN THEY HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.

3. I THINK THAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CIVIL WAR IN 1860S AND THE FIGHTING IN THE WAR OF TERROR TODAY IS THAT TODAY IS MORE DANGEROUS THEN BECAUSE THERE IS MORE CRIME TODAY AND PEOPLE THINK DIFFERENTLY TODAY THAN THEY DID THEN AND ALSO THERE ARE MORE POWERFUL WEAPONS TODAY. A CIVIL WAR THEN IS ABOUT THE SAME AS CIVIL WAR NOW.

4. WAR IS RIGHT WHE YOU HAVE A GOOD ENOUGH REASON TO FIGHT AND ITS WRONG WHEN YOU KILL FOR NO REASON. I DONT REALLY KNOW IF I CAN SEE MYSELF FIGHTING IN A WAR. IVE NEVER REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT IT. AND NO I CANNOT SEE MYSELF PROTESTING FOR A WAR.
