Essay Question: Religion has always played a vital role in the history of individuals and nations.  In colonial America, this was no different.  In what ways did religion influence the personal behavior, the political structure and policies, the regulation of wealth and trade and interpersonal relations in colonial America?  In what ways has religion in modern America remained the same or changed in analyzing the power of religion over the above factors today?
Project Based LessonMiddle Passage Artwork: Students will use paints or sketches to demonstrate the connection between historical events, the emotions they produce and the power of art to communicate those feelings to the world.  Students will examine a psychological perspective to understanding trauma represented in  historical analysis by using art to demonstrate not only perspective, but also reality.

Links Lesson: 1) Compare and Contrast chart of the origins of various colonies, 2) Cause and Effect chart of England's decisions to control the colonies (Navigation Acts, Dominion of NE, salutary neglect, etc.), 3) Concept Web on the culture of colonial America (women, religion, trade, politics, etc.)
Essential Questions: 1) What method is best in establishing a new colony? 2) Is there a benign way to rule others or is all colonialism wrong? 3) What causes changes in peoples beliefs concerning religion?  Why? 4) Are profits more important than people today?  How or why? 5) When is war justified and when isnt it?

4.  Why did African tribes collaborate with Europeans in the slave trade?  Explain and examine from all perspectives.
5.  How did the colonies differ from one another in origin?  Which offered the best model for English citizens?  Why?

7.  What are the strengths and weaknesses of a mercantilist economy between mother country and colony?
8.  Describe the Middle Passage from the perspective of an African slave and explain its psychological impact on history.
9.  Compare the Quakers to the Puritans in colonial America.  How did each affect the development of colonial settlements?
10.  Colonial governments began with experiments of direct democracy.  Did America continue or change over the years?
