Assignment #18: Farmingville

1.  Consider the four positions below.  For each position, find evidence to either support or oppose that particular statement.  Cite your sources used.

  1. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by using county and municipal tax dollars to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.
  2. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by assessing a special tax on landscapers and contractors to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.
  3. In favor of petitioning the federal government to arrest the undocumented workers and, in the interim, using all legal forms of intimidation and harassment to get the laborers to leave Farmingville.
  4. In favor of organizing private and government efforts through churches, synagogues, civic groups, and social service providers to welcome the day laborers, get to know them as individuals, and offer English classes and other services that would help the day laborers become part of the community of Farmingville.

2.  Closely examine the various steps taken by the residents of Farmingville. Which escalated the conflict and how? Which de-escalated the conflict and how? How might people have approached things differently in order to resolve the conflict?

3.  One of the women in the film says, "I'm scared to death of the trickle down of intolerance to our kids, and it's happening." Discuss what spurs people to cross the line from words, feelings or beliefs to violence. Was the arrest of four Sachem High School students for arson and hate crimes a predictable outcome? What was the primary cause of the violence, the presence of the day laborers, community reaction to the presence of the day laborers, or something else? Were there things that people in Farmingville could have to done avoid the escalation to violence? Is there a strict line between "verbal violence" and "physical violence?" What kinds of verbal and physical violence have you witnessed in your community? Are they linked, and if so, how?

4.  Investigate the situation of day laborers in your community. What kinds of jobs do they hold? How much do they typically earn? Are they American-born or immigrants? If they are immigrants, are they documented or undocumented? Are they treated fairly? In what ways are their contributions to your community positive and in what ways are they challenging?

  1. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by using county and municipal tax dollars to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.

Support they all can use there tax money for the hiring hall to take the labor off the street, besides they all own there own house and can spare the money

  1. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by assessing a special tax on landscapers and contractors to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.

Support because they will get a lot of money for hiring hall

  1. In favor of petitioning the federal government to arrest the undocumented workers and, in the interim, using all legal forms of intimidation and harassment to get the laborers to leave Farmingville.

Oppose, because there is no way the government can do that because that would take months and a lot of money and they will becoming back anyway

Well the yelling at the immigrants kind of escalated when the immigrants call them racist people, the fact that they got together to talk it didnt help much , the conflict that de-escalated was when the against won when they didnt get the hall , they all could of getting the immigrants out of the corners by saying yes to the hall

3.  One of the women in the film says, "I'm scared to death of the trickle down of intolerance to our kids, and it's happening." Discuss what spurs people to cross the line from words, feelings or beliefs to violence. Was the arrest of four SachemHigh School students for arson and hate crimes a predictable outcome? What kinds of verbal and physical violence have you witnessed in your community? Are they linked, and if so, how?

Well people get agraved and angry that they resolute to violence to prove a point, the assret of those boys just made it worse on the towns people and they picked one group to blame it on, well it was mostly the committees feeling for the people trying to help the immigrant, some of the committees angry kind of pushed those boys so far they just wanted to show what they will do to get immigrants out of there, people in farming vile could of just gone with the hall and stopped complain that they should deport , well in my community havent witness thank god but I heard a lot of things that can be really hard to hear from kids

Well they would work in factories, about 5 in hour, immigrants and some Americans do that, undocumented , well it depends what kind of factory, well the factories might get more things done and money wile the community doesnt know

1. I am in favor of using the tax dollars to build a hiring hall for the local immigrants.  The neighborhood's main complaint is that the immigrants loiter on the street corners. They claim that it makes them feel unease about their children playing outside.  i view this as a valid complaint, but one that can be solved with a hiring hall.

2. I am also in favor of putting a special tax on the people who do day labor.  I think that since the hall will also help them, they should help support the construction and maitenence of it as well.

3. I am not in favor of the government using extra force to find out who the illegal workers are.  Although they are illegel and should not be here, they have rights as well.

4. I would be in favor of all of these activites if they had a way of paying for them.  You cannot take more tax money for that after you take some for the hall.

2.  The step that really escalated the rift in Farmingville is when the residents started taking pictures of the immigrants.  This took it to another level.  The immigrants became really upset and started to argue and beomce more defensive.

3.  Verbal conflicts escalate to physical violence when one certain thing happens.  The person or people who are getting verbally abused become defensive.  This usually leads to them attacking back.  This is when it turns into physical violence.

4.    The day laboeres hold jobs such as landscaping.

1. Yes. I am in favor of this because i feel like if the people of farmingville don't want to have day labors on their streets them they should at least help a little by paying for them to have a hiring building. I just thnk that makes the most sense.
2. No, because the landscapers and contractors might not be form farmingville. I only think that residents should pay this tax.
3. Noooo. They shouldn't be harassed or intimidated, when it comes down to it, id rather them just be deported.
4. Yes, because it is helping everyone in the end the people won't be intimidated by them, and they'll no longer be harassed.

-two

Actually killing people was crazy and yelling things at people also escalated the situation. Having meetings with in their own groups de-escalated the conflict. I think to approach things differently the people of farmingville should listen to each side and talk everything ina civilized way. Without screaming at one another.

-3
I think to look at a group of people and assume that they're like the same people is horrid, but it also means that some one is going to do something out of control and i do think that the hate crime was predicable. These kids were young, and so i think that they didn't really understand in full what was going on, i think it was their ignorance of the situation that caused them to act they way they did. I feel like maybe they thought they were doing farmingville a favor. They could have not gotten so worked up about everything and they could have tried not getting their kids involved. No, i think any sort of violence is bad. They're linked, when people to fight they also verbally threaten of intimidate othe person they're fighting.

-4
I haven't experienced people like that in my community. But i do know that they have jobs like truck drivers and meat packers. They're both american born and immigrants. Again, both. i think it depends on where they work and live. They'd probably add a diverse perspective to my community, it may be difficult to find jobs for low skilled poeple.

1.  Consider the four positions below.  For each position, find evidence to either support or oppose that particular statement.  Cite your sources used.1.      In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by using county and municipal tax dollars to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall. - That would be wrong.. If the community apposes to pay taxes to pay for a hall, then by god, dont do it.. Or this isnt a democracy after all.2.      In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by assessing a special tax on landscapers and contractors to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall. - This would not work, considering that the workers dont pay any taxes as their jobs are not legal work and they may be illegal immigrants.3.      In favor of petitioning the federal government to arrest the undocumented workers and, in the interim, using all legal forms of intimidation and harassment to get the labor to leave Farmingville. - Yes! Find illegals! Get rid of them all! You can never find any without looking for documentation!4.      In favor of organizing private and government efforts through churches, synagogues, civic groups, and social service providers to welcome the day laborers, get to know them as individuals, and offer English classes and other services that would help the day laborers become part of the community of Farmingville.- It is not that they are standing around for work, but that people feel that they are illegal, and by knowing that, excuses rises and discrimination is brought up.

2.Closely examine the various steps taken by the residents of Farmingville. Which escalated the conflict and how? Which de-escalated the conflict and how? How might people have approached things differently in order to resolve the conflict?

-                      They form and join organizations, they get politicians involved, and want to clean the streets and get rid of illegal immigrants. The conflict is never really resolved.

-

3.One of the women in the film says, "I'm scared to death of the trickle down of intolerance to our kids, and it's happening." Discuss what spurs people to cross the line from words, feelings or beliefs to violence.

                                                                                                                                    - I dont believe anyone should be punished for hate crimes. Either you performed a crime or you didnt You should be trailed on what you did, not who you offended. Hate crimes only separates races and makes people more away that race is a factor to criminal activity. The primary cause of violence is when people of different races identify their differences and do not wish to accept the ideas and ways of another people. It becomes a battle for racial superiority.

                        - Day labors in which immigrants in New Bedford hold, are jobs like factory workers, processing fish, carpentry and construction work and domestic work. They usually earn minimum wage or a little more and many times even less. There are both documented and undocumented. They are treated fairly depending on what country of origin. From what I have seen, a Portuguese immigrant would be treated better then a Dominican. The only positive things I believe a immigrant carries on to America is the will to do terrible work for the littlest of money, not knowing that they are being taken advantage of, then again, thats a bad thing, isnt it.

1. Consider the four positions below. For each position, find evidence to either support or oppose that particular statement. Cite your sources used.

a) In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by using county and municipal tax dollars to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.

By doing this it would solve the problems the residents have with the immigrants being on the streets, they would have to pay but they are the ones that have the problem.

b) In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by assessing a special tax on landscapers and contractors to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.

I dont really understand this but landscapers shouldnt be taxed on anything they are not involved.

c) In favor of petitioning the federal government to arrest the undocumented workers and, in the interim, using all legal forms of intimidation and harassment to get the laborers to leave Farmingville.

I dont think its right to intimidate anyone that is trying to make a living even if by law it is legal.

d) In favor of organizing private and government efforts through churches, synagogues, civic groups, and social service providers to welcome the day laborers, get to know them as individuals, and offer English classes and other services that would help the day laborers become part of the community of Farmingville.

This is a great idea this way they can become an effective, legal part of our society.

2. Closely examine the various steps taken by the residents of Farmingville. Which escalated the conflict and how? Which de-escalated the conflict and how? How might people have approached things differently in order to resolve the conflict?

By the residents trying to intimidate the immigrants the problem was escalated. By a meeting being held the conflict was being brought down. They should have approach the immigrants as people instead of invaders.

Were there things that people in Farmingville could have to done avoid the escalation to violence? Is there a strict line between "verbal violence" and "physical violence?" What kinds of verbal and physical violence have you witnessed in your community? Are they linked, and if so, how?

Im guessing I missed class on this day.

They always have jobs that no one else wants to do and the jobs they do have they of course. Most are not american born, are illegal, and not treated well. They do jobs that most people dont want to do.

1. Consider the four positions below. For
each position, find evidence to either support or oppose that
particular statement. Cite your sources used.

A. Yes I support this. If you don't want immigrants workers and what not so badly then pay.

B. I disagree why should we tax them? They've done nothing wrong besides hire this immigrants. if they are hiring illegals then they should get arrested not taxed

C Support. Would be nice and would be relativly cheap

2. The hateful protest, comments and acts all are causes of the escalation of the problem.

3. Hate is spread. It doesn't just come from no where, kids get it from there parents and who they hang around with. Adults get it from friends and family or it is installed in them when they were younger. There isn't a line between verbal and physical violence as both are expressions of anger and hate and if you yell at someone they dislike you, hit them? They dislike you too

4. Personally I don't know any day laborers here or illegals. They probably do exist and stuff but the situation isn't too bad as it hasn't become a major problem. They take the jobs no one wants and we don't it's that simple

1.  Consider the four positions below.  For each position, find evidence to either support or oppose that particular statement.  Cite your sources used.

  1. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by using county and municipal tax dollars to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall. I support this decision, because I feel an organized hiring hall would clear the streets and make the residents of Farmingville feel more relaxed.
  2. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by assessing a special tax on landscapers and contractors to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall. I support this idea for heping to fund a hiring hall.  I feel the money would not be wasted.
  3. In favor of petitioning the federal government to arrest the undocumented workers and, in the interim, using all legal forms of intimidation and harassment to get the laborers to leave Farmingville. I feel that it isn't fair that the federal government arrests some of these undocumented workers, because many of them are legal immigrants.  There is no hiring hall to make it easy for these workers to obtain documents.  There is no reason why these legal working residents should leave Farmingville just because they cannot obtain documents, and don't know how to.
  4. In favor of organizing private and government efforts through churches, synagogues, civic groups, and social service providers to welcome the day laborers, get to know them as individuals, and offer English classes and other services that would help the day laborers become part of the community of Farmingville. I think that this is a good idea for the Farmingville natives and these new residents.  Many of the problems have been heated due to language barriors, and the labororers would be able to find more documented and stable jobs if they learned English and had been accepted by the community.

2.  Closely examine the various steps taken by the residents of Farmingville. Which escalated the conflict and how? Which de-escalated the conflict and how? How might people have approached things differently in order to resolve the conflict? The residents of Farmingville generalized all of the Mexican workers in their town.  They held biases that these uneducated people had no morals and were dangerous to their children.  They felt many of these people were thieves and not honest workers, and that they were illegally thriving off of their community.  Their intolerance towards ALL of the day laborers escelated the conflict.  It made them come across as racist and discriminative.  When they held meetings and talks they assured people that it had nothing to do with their race, but that they felt the day laborers were mostly illegal and didn't belong there (although they had no evidence to support this, and they were just making generalizations).  The meetings de-escalated the conflict a bit.  They should have made a hiring hall.

The woman in the film felt that her children could no longer go out and play because of the Mexicans on the street.  She thought that these people would attack them and that they were criminals, with no morals and intruders.  Many other people in Farmingville shared this attitude and hate crimes inevitably happened.  The community's negative and close-minded reaction to the presence of the day-laborers instigated the attack. There isn't a strict line between verbal and physical violence.  While many members of Farmingville expressed their distress with words...it wasn't long before some people with a physical angst, felt the same way.

Many Portuguese-Americans in my community work as fisherman.  They are paid usually well, depending on how well their cargo is.  Many are American's born of Portuguese immigrants.  Many of our fish comes from these men, but we are also the largest importer of heroin in the U.S., and many of the drugs are said to come in through the fishing ports.

In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by using county and municipal tax dollars to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.

A hiring hall could be more useful, especially the fact that people of the community complain of them rushing cars for no reason and whatnot. I mean, they have complained about it, and ontop of that it would be easier to find work at a hiring hall also. Just trying to make it work would be the challenge.

In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by assessing a special tax on landscapers and contractors to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.

How the hiring hall would be funded would be difficult. Probably donations by bigger companys and higher class people could donate. They probably wouldn't mind....

In favor of petitioning the federal government to arrest the undocumented workers and, in the interim, using all legal forms of intimidation and harassment to get the laborers to leave Farmingville.

They could although, stepup their game to fix this. I personally think it would be hard to crackdown, but who knows. They may make a case against the government racially profiling or something.

In favor of organizing private and government efforts through churches, synagogues, civic groups, and social service providers to welcome the day laborers, get to know them as individuals, and offer English classes and other services that would help the day laborers become part of the community of Farmingville.

I would be in favor. If they have the effort and motivation to do it, sure. If they're my neighbor, why can't they be apart of a community and especially when they're a neighbor (if they are to my household) can't they be greeted just as fairly I would be doing to my other neighbors?

2. Closely examine the various steps taken by the residents of Farmingville. Which escalated the conflict and how? Which de-escalated the conflict and how? How might people have approached things differently in order to resolve the conflict?

What escalated was yelling and protesting so harshly.

1. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by using county and municipal tax dollars to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.

I think that developing a hiring hall would be a good idea to keep immagrants off the street. Then people would feel more safe about letting their children outside.

2. In favor of petitioning the federal government to arrest the undocumented workers and, in the interim, using all legal forms of intimidation and harassment to get the laborers to leave Farmingville.
- i think arresting them would eb unfair because some of them are legal. if there were a hiring hall everyone would be able to get papers and their wouldnt be a problem.

3.In favor of organizing private and government efforts through churches, synagogues, civic groups, and social service providers to welcome the day laborers, get to know them as individuals, and offer English classes and other services that would help the day laborers become part of the community of Farmingville.
-I trhink this would be a great idea. it would welcome the laborers and respect among individuals would develop. then there would be peace and unity.

4. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by assessing a special tax on landscapers and contractors to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall.
- i support this idea because the money would be well needed. it would solve most of the problems.

2.  Closely examine the various steps taken by the residents of Farmingville. Which escalated the conflict and how? Which de-escalated the conflict and how? How might people have approached things differently in order to resolve the conflict?
the fact that they came across as racist and singled the mexicans out escalated the conflict. they held meetings were they told people that they were not racist they were just concerned and all this stuff but clearly they were racist against the mexicans because they were treating them inhuman.

3.  One of the women in the film says, "I'm scared to death of the trickle down of intolerance to our kids, and it's happening." - labor workers in our community work in fish houses, landscaping, cleaning services, etc. They usually earn way under minimum wage. Employers know that they can pay them less than american workers so thats why they hire them. some are american born and most are illegal. they hel out our community but yet they hurt us because they are taking american jobs.

  1. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by using county and municipal tax dollars to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall. In FAvor because if your going to complain about them standing around on corners looking for jobs then do something about it.
  2. In favor of solving Farmingville's problems by assessing a special tax on landscapers and contractors to pay for construction and operation of a hiring hall. If they want the workers then yes,
  3. In favor of petitioning the federal government to arrest the undocumented workers and, in the interim, using all legal forms of intimidation and harassment to get the laborers to leave Farmingville. Not in favor because everyone deserves to better their life, especially if they arent doing anything wrong i dont think its right.
  4. In favor of organizing private and government efforts through churches, synagogues, civic groups, and social service providers to welcome the day laborers, get to know them as individuals, and offer English classes and other services that would help the day laborers become part of the community of Farmingville. I agree, because it will help people lighten up to foreigners if they speak the language and adapt to their surroundings

2.  Closely examine the various steps taken by the residents of Farmingville. Which escalated the conflict and how? Which de-escalated the conflict and how? How might people have approached things differently in order to resolve the conflict? People standing on all the street corners m and it goes away when they are not out, people could have set  up a hring hall or something along that line.

What kinds of verbal and physical violence have you witnessed in your community? Are they linked, and if so, how?

People in the town didnt like them there and the fact more immagrants were moving there and hanging around the streets got the community upset and that escalated it.
4.  Investigate the situation of day laborers in your community. What kinds of jobs do they hold? How much do they typically earn? Are they American-born or immigrants? If they are immigrants, are they documented or undocumented? Are they treated fairly?
